Spring League Week 6 Preview

Steve James
Week 6 of the Iowa Spring League pits two Top Prospect Teams from the Iowa Spring League vs the Hitters Navy and Red as well as Wisconsin STiKS 2017's.  In Iowa there are some good matchups as well with the Aquasox, Red Dragons, Whitecaps, and the two combo teams.  Here's what to watch for in Week 6.

Schultz and Swanda vs. Hitters Navy

Connor Schultz (2017 - Cedar Falls) and John Swanda (2017 - Roosvelt) will be taking the mound vs Hitters Navy at 9 AM Sunday at Nash Park.  Schultz has been a strike throwing machine all spring and the velocity is trending upwards.  He's pitched steady at 85-88 MPH touching an 89 and throwing 3 pitches for strikes.  Swanda is making his return after a couple weeks off and is poised to have a quality outing vs the Hitters.  The Hitters Navy squad as a whole really swing the bat well and don't give up any at bats.  Obviously the guys to watch for at the plate for the Hitters are the usual suspects of Kelenic, Binelas, Leonard, and Sisk among others.  For Team Van Scoyoc/Frazier the middle of the lineup combination of Izaya Ono-Fullard (2017 - Iowa City West), Connor McCaffery (2017 - Iowa City West), Joel Thompson (2017 - Lewis Central), and Brayden Frazier (2018- Jefferson) should compete well against a tough Hitters Navy pitching staff.  It should be a very good match-up all weekend.

Team Sole/Wendel vs Hitters Red
Team Sole/Wendel will be playing Hitters Red 3 of the 4 games this weekend.  Team Sole/Wendel will be without a handful of quality arms, but will compete very well with who they have there this weekend.  Jarrett Blunt (2018 - Ottumwa), Luke Llewellyn (2018 - Urbandale), Tony Comellas (2018 - Iowa City West), Kade Vander Molen (2018 - Pella Christian), and Austin Krob (2018 - Lisbon) have all pitched well this spring topping out anywhere from 84-88 MPH.  They look to keep a quality Hitters Red team at bay.  The guys who have been swinging the bat well have been two way guys Comellas and Vander Molen.  Casey Sole (2019 - Cedar Falls) has been barreling the ball up well when he hasn't been getting walked a league leading 12 times.

Combo Team 1 vs Whitecaps
Elijah Townsend (2018 - Cedar Falls) has been pitching well all spring throwing a lot of strikes and topping out at 81 MPH.  He's improved his strike throwing and has developed a quality change up that he throws for strikes.  Tyler Oberbroeckling (2019 - Linn Mar) leads the Combo Team 1 in hitting and has really improved with the bat this offseason.  Eli Bergeron (2017 - Center Point) has also been swinging the bat well this spring and should be a good matchup vs the Whitecaps arms.

Combo Team 2 vs Aquasox

The Sunday 9:00 AM game of the Combo Team 2 vs Aquasox should be another good matchup.  Graysen Drezek (2020 - North Scott) has topped at 83 MPH with his fastball and has shown quality outings this spring.  He'll be facing off against Tyler Oberbroeckling (2018 - Davenport West) and Noah McCreary (2018 - Davenport West) have pitched well this spring topping out at 81 MPH and 82 MPH respectively.  McCreary has a 12/1 strikeout to walk ratio  and Oberbroeckling is averaging more than 2 strikeouts per inning.  They'll be facing a tough young Aquasox team who are solid up and down their lineup and are led by Andrue Henry (2020 - Dubuque Senior) who has 7 RBI on the season.

Red Dragons vs Combo Team 2
The Red Dragons face off against Combo Team 2 at 5:15 PM Saturday.  The Red Dragons will be going with Luke Anderson (2020 - Central DeWitt) who has made some quality adjustments to his delivery this off season.  He's topped at 80 MPH with more to come.  Combo Team 2 will be going with Cade Lisk (2018 - Fairfield) who has pitched well this season topping at 82 MPH and striking out 11 in 8 innings.  Cole Perrenoud (2017 - Western Dubuque) has been swinging the bat well for the Red Dragons collecting 7 hits in 16 at bats.
