For the third time in team history the Minnesota Twins will select first overall in the 2017 MLB Draft after finishing the 2016 season with the worst overall record (59-103). The previous two times the Twins had the No. 1 overall pick they selected Tim Belcher in 1983 and Joe Mauer in 2001. Belcher opted not to sign with the Twins and instead became a first-round pick the following year by the New York Yankees before enjoying a 14-year MLB career that saw him go 146-140 with a 4.16 ERA. Mauer just finished his 13th season, all with the Twins, and was named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 2009.
Only one player went unsigned in the top three rounds of the 2016 draft (Nick Lodolo, 41st overall), meaning there will be only one compensation pick awarded for unsigned players.
The 2016 MLB Draft will take place Monday-Wednesday, June 12-14.
Tie-breakers for teams that finished with the exact same record/winning percentage are awarded to the team that finished with the worse record the previous season. Changes to the draft order due to free agent signings will be reflected once teams start signing players in the offseason.

Compensation Round A
Below is the list of the eight players that turned down qualifying offers, thus making them free agents. The players had until 5:00 p.m. ET on Monday, Nov. 14 to either accept or reject these offers. The players that accept receive a one-year, $17.2 million deal (unless they agree to a different contract). The players that didn't are now free agents. The teams that don't re-sign these free agents will be given a compensatory selection as listed below. The teams that sign these players will lose their first round picks, unless they have a pick among the top 10 overall selections, in which they would lose their next pick.
