CHET LEMON’S JUICE WINS WWBA 2007/18U NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

Chet Lemon’s Juice defeated the South Charlotte Panthers 4-3 in a hard fought championship game to win the 2007 WWBA 2007/18U National Championship Monday in Marietta, Georgia.

Both the Juice and the Panthers were low seeds in the 16 team championship round after losing games in the 2nd round of pool play and entering championship play with 5-1 records. The Panthers were the 12th seed, the Juice the 14th seed.

The Juice had outstanding starting pitching all week, with 6 complete games plus a 6 inning effort in their 10 contests. RHP Brian Brown and LHP Daley Cox both were 2-0 with dual complete game wins, while LHP Graham Hicks turned in 6 shutout innings in the Juice’s semifinal win over Hoots Baseball. Cox, a 2007 prospect who will be attending Daytona Beach CC, came in to throw 2 scoreless innings to save the championship game and earn Most Valuable Pitcher honors.

Except when LHP Hamilton Bennett was on the mound, the Panthers didn’t have the same sort of dominance during the week but the wins added up just the same, as the team received contributions from players throughout a line up sparked by SS/leadoff hitter Whit Merrifield. Bennett threw two complete game wins, including a shutout. The list of teams South Charlotte defeated in the playoffs was especially impressive; the East Cobb Astros, 2004 champion Diamond Devils and an outstanding Savannah Chain team.

3B/RHP Corey Thomas was excellent on both sides of the ball for the Juice and received the Most Valuable Player award. He threw a 4 hit/11 strikeout complete game shutout over the San Diego Show, an eventual Final 16 team, in 2nd round pool play. Playing third base, the 6-3, 190 lb Thomas, a 2008 prospect from Middleton HS in Tampa, was 8-18 at the plate and led the Juice in Rbi’s with 11 Rbi’s. His towering 400+ foot home run in the championship game gave the Juice an early 1-0 lead.

CONSOLATION FINAL

Team Adidas defeated the East Cobb Yankees in the Consolation Championship, 5-4. Team Adidas, a team made up primarily of 2009 prospects, was the runner up in the 2006 WWBA World Underclass championship last October.

The consolation round featured the 108 teams that did not make the 40 team 2nd round of pool play and featured some of the top travel teams in the country. Team Adidas won five consecutive games over three days against older competition to take the trophy.
