East Cobb Astros 15u defeat Norcal 15u Black Sox to win the title

After 5 days of great weather and great baseball, rain finally hit the East Cobb Complex on Saturday. After the delay, play resumed in the Semifinal games with the East Cobb Astros and Norcal 15u Black Sox advancing to play for the title. The championship game lived up to its billing with excitement and great plays by both teams with Astros ultimately winning the ball game in 10 innings.

Norcal got on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning on a single by Jaycob Brugman which scored lead-off hitter Curtis Gomez. East Cobb starting pitcher Brooks Colquitt settled in throwing 5 straight shutout innings after that.

East Cobb got on the board in the 5th inning on an RBI single by Andrew Toles that brought in Chase Butler to tie the game at 1. The score remained tied until the top of the 7th when Andrew Tules and Jake Skole led with singles. Clean up hitter Stafford Booth got down a squeeze bunt with one out to score one of the runs for the Astros. Norcal responded as they have throughout the tournament with 2 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, putting the game into extras. Norcal led off the 7th with 2 bloop singles from Bobby Ramos and Juan Padilla. Eventually, the bases were loaded with 2 outs when Jaycob Brugman coaxed a walk from Brooks Colquitt to bring in the first run. Eric Jaffe singled to left to bring in the tying run with Chris Gomez being thrown out at the plate by East Cobb leftfielder Andrew Toles.

Norcal pitcher Scott Griggs shut down the Astros in the 8th and 9th as did East Cobb pitcher Andrew Smith. East Cobb finally broke the game open in the 10th putting up 6 runs. The 6 runs were too much for Norcal to overcome and the Astros came away with the victory.

East Cobb’s Zane Evans came away with the Most Valuable Player award from the tournament hitting an impressive .350 with 13 RBI’s, 5 doubles, 8 runs, and picked up a win on the mound as well. Norcal’s Scott Griggs won the Most Valuable Pitcher award with 9 and 1/3 innings pitched giving up 2 runs and 11 strikeouts while flashing a fastball up to 91 MPH.

The Indiana Prospects defeated Indy PONY Express to win the Consolation Championship.
