Outstanding defensive catcher, cat-like quickness shifting, blocks balls as well as any HS catcher in many years, very quick release on throws, 1.84 best pop, threw 83 mph between innings, sacrifices arm strength for quickness/accuracy at times. Left-handed hitter, open spread stance, gets too wide with his base at times, very good bat speed, explodes hands at the ball, makes game adjustments to shorten up, has lift/power but can also take ball the opposite way, still developing real identify as a hitter but has the tools. Defense and athleticism stands out, plays the game hard. Good student, verbal commitment to San Diego.

2007 National Showcase Report

Gerrit Cole is a 2008 RHP with a 6'3, 190 lb. frame from Santa Ana, CA who attends Orange Lutheran HS. He has a present strong build with broad shoulders and some projection. Cole has electric stuff and throws with minimal effort and a simple delivery. His fastball was consistently 94-96 mph and had very late, hard boring life at times. Cole's slider was 81 mph with good bite and plenty of depth and he showed nice feel for a change up, unsual for a young power pitcher. The most impressive thing about Cole, aside from how easily he throws high velocity fastballs, is that he shows a mean streak on the mound and attacks hitters with an aggressive purpose. He has the chance to be a very high draft pick next June should he maintain the stuff and approach he showed in Cincinnati. Cole has committed to UCLA. Selected to 2007 Aflac All-American team.

How it’s going:
-Eight years of service time

Five-tool talent and can use them. Good student, verbal commitment to Georgia.

How it’s going:
-Three years service time
-.258 average with a .806 OPS
-Futures Game selection

Aaron Hicks (2008 Long Beach, CA)
PG All American Classic Year: 2007
MLB Draft: 1st Round, Minnesota Twins, 2008
MLB Debut: 2013

How it started:
2007 National Showcase Report

Aaron Hicks is a 2008 OF/P with a 6'1, 160 lb. frame from Long Beach, CA who attends Wilson HS. He has a greyhound body with lean, long features and tons of projection. Quite simply, Hicks has all the tools. He's a 6.45 runner who has both a long, easy stride in the outfield and a quick first step stealing bases. Hicks' arm strength is almost silly; we don't believe he was completely healthy at the showcase with stiffness behind his shoulder but he still threw 97 mph from the outfield (!!) and 95 from the mound with an 83 mph curveball. Hicks is a switch-hitter who looks to be pretty balanced as far as bat speed and approach is concerned from both sides of the plate. He's an aggressive hitter who takes a full cut at the ball and shows plus bat speed. If anything, Hicks might have to cut down his length/aggressiveness in his swing. There is no "hit the ball on the ground and run" to Hicks' approach, he's trying to crush the ball and has the tools to do it. It's a testament to Hicks' tools and ceiling as an outfielder that his 95/83 mph pitching ability is an afterthought. He's a first round type talent on both sides of the ball and that doesn't happen too often. A true 5-tool player. Selected to 2007 Aflac All-American team.

How it’s going:
-Eight years service time
-.235 average with a .734 OPS
-88 career Home Runs.

DJ LeMahieu (2007 Bloomfield Hills, MI)
PG All American Classic Year: 2006
MLB Draft: 2nd Round, Chicago Cubs, 2009
MLB Debut: 2011

How it started:
2006 National Showcase Report

D.J. LeMahieu is a 2007 right hand hitting shortstop/3rd baseman from Brother Rice HS, residing in Bloomfield Hills, MI. LeMahieu has a long, rangy, athletic build on a plus 6', 185 lb. frame that has an awful lot of room to fill out. He is one of the more exciting players to watch and then consider his future because he is so good now, but has so much development ahead of him. LeMahieu was ranked #15 among PG National Top 100 position players and when it is all said and done in a number of years from now, he could be one of the best from what looks to be a stellar '07 high school position player class. Nothing that LeMahieu does takes a lot of effort. At the plate he can hit, simple. His hands are alive and he easily gets his swing underway. His hands fly from their starting position and fly through the hitting zone, accelerating through contact. His feel for hitting is advanced for a young player. LeMahieu not only has natural hitting instincts and ability, he has a technically sound swing, keeping his hands inside the ball and staying long through in the zone. He produces easy power and uses the whole field. He showed the ability to hit all pitches and just looks like he is an offensive monster waiting to happen. LeMahieu has as good a chance to be three hole in the Big Leagues someday as any player in the '07 class. On defense he is a primary shortstop and many already want to move him to 3rd base, but he can stay at short for awhile longer. He goes to and through the ball well and has good feet. His arm is a plus and his release is quick. He will be a plus defensive 3rd baseman, but can also be a solid average shortstop, providing corner position type power. If he gets to be 6', 230 lb., then he probably has to move. LeMahieu ran 4.59 home/1st with a respectable 7.15 60 yard time. He is one of the top high school draft prospects and likely has had his pick of a D1 program to attend.

How it’s going:
-Ten years service time
-.305 average with a .787 OPS with 327 career extra base hits.
-Three time All Star
-Two time Silver Slugger
-Three time Gold Glove Awards
-Two time Wilson Defensive Player of the Year
-All MLB First Team

High leg raise delivery with lots of energy, extended 3/4's arm action, lots going on but repeats delivery very well and shows athleticism. Fastball up to 88 mph, saw 89-91 consistently a week later, good fastball life with tough angle for hitters. Hard spinning slurve type breaking ball with big depth at times, can control depth and location on breaking ball. Did not see a change up but should become a big part of arsenal in the future. Slender live bodied athlete, good strength potential. 6.83 runner, open stance, easy load and wrap, busy approach, very quick hands, some lift in swing, stays inside the ball, hard contact to LCF, would benefit from simplifying approach. Outstanding overall athlete, did not pitch but usually 88-91 mph off the mound. Good student, verbal commitment to Louisiana State. Selected to the Aflac All-American team.

High leg raise delivery, stays balanced and on line, big loose arm swing, surprisingly low effort release considering velocity, great lower/upper half sequence coming through, 3/4's arm slot, makes throwing a baseball look easy. Big fastball velocity, warmed up at 95 mph, topped out at 97, gets downhill well, late fastball life at times, could pitch with a true plus/plus fastball in the future with additional strength. Change up best secondary pitch at present, good fading action, maintains arm speed well.
