Witt Jr. goes No. 2 in MLB Draft | 2019 MLB Draft Preview Content
2019 PG All-American Classic: Rosters | Selection Show (video)
The deadline for signing players from the 2019 MLB Draft has come and gone, as players that were selected June 3-5 in the First Year Player Draft had until 5:00 p.m. ET on Friday to sign with their respective clubs. Of the 57 former PG All-Americans that were selected, 42 elected to begin their professional careers.
The collective total of the bonuses these former PG All-Americans signed for is quite staggering, as that total came to $68,997,400. This includes the draft's second overall pick, Bobby Witt Jr, who signed with the Royals for $7,787,400. Three other players – Riley Greene, CJ Abrams and Nick Lodolo – signed bonuses in excess of $5 million.
Of the 57 players taken, that's an average of over $1.21 million per player. Of the 42 players that signed, that's an average of over $1.64 million per player. Twenty of the players that signed inked seven-figure deals and 17 of those 20 played in the 2018 Classic last summer.
The top 38 PG All-Americans that were drafted ended up signing, including all players taken among the top 18 rounds. The first unsigned All-Americans were a pair of 20th round picks, Myles Austin and Jack Leiter, who were taken by the Brewers and Yankees respectively and have committed to play with SEC schools at Alabama and Vanderbilt.
Since the game's inception in 2003, 215 PG All-Americans have been selected in the first round of the draft and 182 have played in the big leagues.
Here are the Perfect Game All-Americans selected in the 2019 MLB Draft and the bonuses they signed for. For the players that didn't sign their college commitment (or the school they attended in 2018 that they intend to return to for the 2019 season) is listed in parenthesis.
