643 DP Cougars Start 2-0 at 16u WWBA

MARIETTA, Ga. -- The hometown crowd had eyes on 643 Cougars 16u Mang Saturday evening as they took on MVP Beast Underclass to open up the 16u WWBA National Championship.

The No. 47 nationally-ranked team got knocked out in the first round of bracket play at the 17u WWBA National Championship last Tuesday, took three days off to recharge, and used that rest as their weapon, leading Saturday's game from start to finish, scoring six runs total to secure a 6-0 shutout.



643 racked up runs early, scoring one run in the first, one in the second, a crooked a three-spot in the third, and one more for good measure in the fourth.

Eliud Poventud started things off right away and made his presence known in a loud way, hitting a ground ball single to right field to lead off the contest, stealing second, and then third, and then home, to put 643 ahead 1-0 in the first frame.

Conlon Walker took four straight pitches and his base to lead off the top of the second before advancing 90 feet on a sac bunt, promptly stole third, and was awarded home plate on a balk call, creating some breathing room for a big third inning to follow.

A leadoff walk again started the third inning, and back-to-back singles from Jacob Bohacek and Poventud loaded the bases. Craig Kalkbrenner hit into a double play but brought Pierce Juhan into score in the process. Bohacek scored on a MVP Beast error to push the score to 4-0, and a Owen Anchors RBI single moved the lead to 5-0.

Bohacek was 1-for-3 in the batters' box on the day, and made an even bigger impact at shortstop, making a couple big plays in the dirt as well.

“When you get a shortstop like [Bohacek] that makes plays that looks like, ‘There is no way he should be making that play,’ and it turns into almost an easy out, it really takes the air out of the defense,” 643 DP Cougars Head Coach Rick Mang said after the game.

The No. 9 ranked right-handed pitcher in the state of Georgia in the 2024 class, Dane Moehler, kept the MVP Beast on their heels throughout his five innings of work, striking out five batters, and topping out at 89 mph.

643 pushed their record to 2-0 at the 16u WWBA with a 10-4 win over Figs Baseball Prospects Underclass on Sunday, knocking out 12 hits and really bringing the bats alive.

Poventud and Walker, hitting out of the one- and two-hole in the lineup, both had two hits and two runs scored. The runs they scored were in large part due to Levi Clark, who drove in five runs out of the three-hole.

Next up is Palm Beach Select 2024 American on Monday morning, and three more pool play games after that before bracket play, where 643 hopes to find itself when the dust settles.
