Coppy's Corner: July 14 Summer Edition

The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role. 

It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape. And, who knows, maybe somewhere out there Jessica Biel is reading it. 
 



Player of the Week: Carter White – Falmouth Commodores 

Talk about making a great first impression! White introduced himself in a very loud and boisterous way this past week by going 9-17 (.529 AVG) with 6 RBI and a 1.147 OPS in his first four games for the Falmouth Commodores. Playing LF in the early going for Falmouth, White has also played some 2B and CF at the University of North Florida, where he spent the 2025 and 2025 college baseball seasons. He improved as each season progressed and saw a major step forward offensively from 2025 to 2026. However, in 2027, White will be bringing his talents to Starkville, Mississippi, to play for the Diamond Dawgs at Mississippi State.  

White is an impact transfer for the Diamond Dawgs coming off a strong season at UNF. He hit .302 AVG, 11 HR, 51 RBI, 8 SB good for a .383 OBP / .581 SLG / .965 OPS in 209 PA for the Ospreys. Strong and athletic with an improving hit approach, he reminds me a little bit of another former bat-first Mississippi State infielder-outfielder in Adam Frazier. Frazier clocked 11 seasons in MLB and has a similar toolset and approach. Although White was passed over as a draft-eligible sophomore this past weekend, he will have a great opportunity to set himself up for the 2027 MLB Draft with a strong season at Mississippi State. He’s already off to a great start in the Cape. 

Carry Tool: Hit. White’s left-handed bat this to all fields, but in the early going on the Cape he showed a propensity to go the other way. This tracks with an approach that saw him perform almost identically against LHP (.974 OPS in 54 PA) and RHP (.959 OPS in 155 PA) in 2026. Likewise, he put up eerily similar numbers at Home (.966 OPS in 131 PA) as he did on the Road (.958 OPS in 78 PA). Most impressive of all was White’s ability to perform against the best starters he faced, posting his best numbers on Fridays (.948 OPS in 59 PA) and Saturdays (1.140 OPS in 56 PA) this season. All of this point to a strong and balanced approach, and it will be exciting to see what he does in the SEC for the Diamond Dawgs in the 2027 season. 

 
Pitcher of the Week: Casey Euper, Orleans Firebirds 

Euper has been Super so far on the Cape. Last week, he was dominant in his start against the Bourne Braves, posting an impressive line of 5.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 SO. On the summer to date, he has dealt with a 1.25 ERA with 21.2 IP, 12 H, 5 BB, 31 SO. 

It’s been a breakout performance for the southpaw who was pretty good this past spring at Pepperdine. Euper went 5-4, 3.11 ERA with 75.1 IP, 67 H, 29 BB, 67 SO this past spring, but what was most impressive was the little impact damage allowed. Euper only allowed 2 HR the entire season, keeping the ball on the ground, and pitching off a FB that continues to improve in velocity and quality (see below). 

Euper’s performance against right-handed hitters (.239 AVG, .661 OPS) was nearly identical to his performance against left-handed hitters (.229 AVG, 641 OPS). The son of a high school coach from Irvine, California, he has an intuitive feel to pitch, keep the ball on the ground, minimize hard contact, and gobble up innings. Although pitching primarily in the West Coast Conference, Euper performed well against the best competition he faced, allowing only .136 AVG and .358 OPS against the two teams he faced from the Big Ten Conference. 

Carry Tool: FB. Euper’s stuff has improved as the temperature has warmed in Orleans. This summer he’s harnessing a FB 91-95 up from 88-91 this spring, and has also seen velocity increases to his SL, CB, and CH. The SL was his out pitch this spring, with a 58% Swing Rate, 29% Miss Rate, and 38% Chase Rate. However, he’s reached a new gear with his FB in the Cape. Using a funky delivery and coming at hitters with a cross-body motion from a high ¾ arm slot, 11 of his 18 whiffs in his last start came off the FB, which really played up at the top of the zone (pun intended). Given that he rarely gives up Home Runs and can neutralize right- and left-handed hitters all the same, this is an exciting pitching prospect to watch in 2027. 


National Nuggets:

Outside of the Cape, everything this week was about the MLB Draft … however, we can still incorporate the Cape into the MLB Draft, and one of my favorite picks was Jarren Advincula, who went #45 overall to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim … Advincula won the Cape Cod League batting title in 2024 with a .392 AVG before slumping to .360 AVG (please note the heavy sarcasm here) in 2025 … the dude can flat hit and a .434 AVG and 1.132 OPS including 30 BB vs. 16 SO at Georgia Tech this season is pretty crazy … not to be outdone, Advincula’s teammate Vahn Lackey went #3 overall to the Minnesota Twins following a season where he hit .397 AVG with a 1.291 OPS and even 15 SB all as a catcher … five picks after Lackey went, the (future Las Vegas) Athletics took outfielder Drew Burress #8 overall, coming off a season where he hit only .358 AVG and 1.130 OPS (more sarcasm) … what are they putting in the water at Georgia Tech? … back to Lackey, the rumors persist that, had the White Sox taken Grady Emerson #1 overall, then the Tampa Bay Rays would have taken Lackey #2 over eventual #1 pick Roch Cholowsky … this comes 18 years after the Rays passed on a super athletic college catcher (Buster Posey) to take a prep shortstop (Tim Beckham) … here at Coppy’s Corner, we predicted Cholowsky would be the first position player taken and Jackson Flora (who went #4 overall to the San Francisco Giants) would be the first pitcher taken … it’s not often that we are right, so clip and save … other 1st round picks that I really liked included Tyler Bell (#10 overall to the Colorado Rockies), Justin Lebron (#18 overall to the Cincinnati Reds), and Cameron Flukey (#22 overall to the Detroit Tigers) … the most intriguing pick of the 1st round to me was the Mets taking Carson Wiggins at #27 … Wiggins’ brother Jaxon is a top prospect with the Chicago Cubs and Carson may have a higher upside following internal brace surgery on his elbow last spring … the Mets have a really good pitching development program and if Wiggins, who is a projectable and athletic 6’5,  can add velocity and pitch shape to an arsenal that was already producing 102 mph FB it could be Jacob Misioriowski type stuff.

Swing plays and still a bunch of room to add muscle mass. Trending really nicely. 1B: Teagan Leach (‘27 VA)-60-yard: 7.02 Max EV: 105-On the barrel throughout ECP. A tightly contested battle between Canes Florida 2029 and Florida Flames 16u capped the 16U Florida Elite Championship, with the Canes earning a 6-5 walk-off win on Monday at JetBlue Park Stadium. “It means a lot to this team specifically because this is their first win as a group,” Canes head coach Alec Bettinger said. “We’ve come up short a couple times, so seeing one go through the hoop here is really nice for the boys.” The Canes defense came out hot, led by Cannon Tyler who started on the mound for the Canes. Tyler set the tone from the start, opening the game with a strikeout. He allowed no hits while striking out three over five innings. His fastball sat 77-82 mph.
