Ohio Valley Regional Scout Notes

Christian Ramirez (2028, Mason, Ohio) helped his team win the championship batting out of the two-hole. Though he didn’t win tournament MVP, Ramirez was my favorite player to watch take a plate appearance. He has an advanced feel for the zone and sees the ball out of the pitcher’s hand quicker than most. Ramirez led the tournament with eight walks, batting .375 with a .583 on-base percentage. Much more than just the approach, the swing is efficient with little wasted movement, creates quality separation, and puts him in an excellent position at contact. With such an advanced foundation already in place, expect Ramirez to make significant strides as he continues to grow and add strength.
 

Toby Woerner (2027, Ontario, Canada) immediately stands out for his size at a true 6-foot-5, 180 pounds. While Woerner hits the ball hard and has obvious strength, he is far from just a power bat. He showed as much pure hitting ability as anyone in the lineup, frequently extending at-bats and fouling off tough pitches until getting something he could drive. Woerner led the tournament in hits with 11, batting .579 with four doubles and eight runs scored. The frame and swing project for above-average in-game power to pair with his already-advanced hit tool.
 

Blake Smith (2028, Chillicothe, Ohio) stood out due to his quick movements in the box and solid frame. He’s a twitchy hitter with fast hands and consistently keeps the barrel on plane. Smith produced over the weekend with a pair of triples, continuing off a strong sophomore season where he led his high school team in a number of offensive categories. There is still more to unlock in the swing. He has a tendency to leak off the backside early, with the back knee losing ground as the rest of the body moves forward, causing the upper and lower halves to get out of sync at times. Even with that, Smith is still able to produce at a high level. The physical tools and feel for getting the barrel on plane from different positions point to a lot of projection as a hitter as everything continues to come together. 


Cole Metzger (2028, Harrison, Ohio) showcased his two-way ability over the weekend, ranking in PG’s top 10 performers for both hitting and pitching. In the box, Metzger batted .429 with nine RBI and two extra-base hits, showing quality stretch through the load and a level bat path. On the mound, the southpaw tossed four hitless innings, topping 83 mph with the fastball while creating deception and giving hitters a unique look. Metzger has a projectable frame at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, and should continue to add both velocity and power as he fills out. 




Ryan Holcomb (2030, Columbus, Ohio) had himself a weekend, winning tournament MVP and helping lead his team to the championship. Holcomb led the 15U bracket in hits, home runs, and RBI. He slashed .500/.522/1.000 with two home runs, two triples, nine runs, and 12 RBI, all while locking down center field. Listed at 5-foot-8, 130 pounds and still 14 years old, the production becomes even more impressive considering there is still plenty of physical development ahead. Holcomb creates great stretch in the load while keeping the bat tight to his body and has shown a strong feel for adjusting to off-speed pitches. The combination of present production, advanced barrel skills, and athleticism makes Holcomb one of the more intriguing follows in the 2030 class.
 

Asher Ballinger (2030, Marion, Ohio) put up excellent numbers over the weekend, batting .421, leading all players with four triples, and tying for the lead in RBI with 12. Ballinger has a unique approach in the box where he is constantly moving. Despite this, the hands stay in sync with the hips, allowing him to consistently get into good position through contact. He’s a twitchy hitter who generates good bat speed with loose, fluid movements and drives the ball to all fields.
 

Cole Mueller (2030, New Albany, Ohio) finished among the top 10 performers for both hitting and pitching. It was at the plate where he really shined, batting a whopping .625 with 12 runs scored and nine RBI. Mueller stepped up when it mattered most on Sunday, going 5-for-6 with four runs, four RBI, and two doubles between the semifinal and championship games. He anchors strong into the backside, creating quality leverage through contact and showing the ability to drive the ball with impact.
 

Blake Aversa (2029, Elburn, Ill.) flashed speed, power, and hitting ability throughout the tournament. He collected 11 hits, six extra-base hits, four stolen bases, and scored 10 runs while playing center field. Aversa has impressive speed with the ability to stretch a single into a double and track down fly balls in the gaps. He shows natural instincts and a feel for the game, giving him a strong foundation to build on as he continues to develop.

Pokers Rally to Capture 16U BCS Title A hot afternoon at JetBlue Stadium in Fort Myers, Florida ended in a 9-1 victory for the Original Florida Pokers 2028 National, defeating SBA Bolts Florida 2028 National on Monday to capture the 16U BCS National Championship. A pitchers’ duel kept the game scoreless through four innings before the Pokers broke it open with a five-run fifth inning. The title marked the Pokers’ second 16U BCS Championship, adding to the championship they won in 2022. PHILADELPHIA – When the folks at Perfect Game reached out to invite him to pitch in the 2026 PG All-Star Game for rising sophomores and juniors, Cullen Scott had one request. “You mind if I get a couple of at-bats, too?” Along with his dad, Scott traveled from the family’s home in Texas to Citizens Bank Park. For the fourth time since its inception in 2023, two rosters comprised of the best rising juniors (and a handful of rising sophomores) will step out onto the field Friday afternoon, kicking off the All-American weekend.
