14u Windy City Classic Scout Notes

Kingston Dumes (2030, Indianapolis, Ind.) put together a solid performance for Filthy Ellis this past Memorial Day weekend. The physical 6-foot-3, 225-pound right-handed prospect displayed present bat speed with strength in the swing, finishing with a .500 average across three games while collecting three hits and driving in two runs. He also showed intriguing upside on the mound, running his fastball up to 79 mph while mixing in a slider and changeup. Currently a PG High Follow and the No. 2-ranked player in Indiana, Dumes remains one of the more projectable long-term profiles in the 2030 class.  


Andrew Nowarita (2030, Valparaiso, Ind.) was another standout for Filthy Ellis during the tournament. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed prospect finished with a .571 average across three games, collecting four hits, including a triple, while driving in two runs. Nowarita displayed a smooth right-handed swing with present bat speed, consistently driving the baseball to the middle of the field throughout the tournament. A PG 13U National Showcase participant, Nowarita continues to display a well-rounded offensive profile with a physical, projectable build.




Caden Nyquist (2030, Pingree Grove, Ill.) put together a productive performance for GRB Rays 14U Illinois - Murray/Matsie this past weekend. The 6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitter finished with a .833 average across three games, collecting five hits, including a double and a triple, while driving in five runs and drawing three walks. Nyquist displayed a controlled approach in the box with present strength in the swing, using the whole field and consistently producing quality contact. His physical build and offensive profile stood out throughout the tournament. 


Jordan Roman (2030, Chicago, Ill.) put together a strong performance for WINDY CITY HIT DOGS 14U Hode over the weekend. The 5-foot-9, 130-pound right-handed hitter finished with a .300 average across four games, collecting three hits, including two triples, while driving in three runs, stealing five bases, and drawing two walks. Roman displayed present bat speed and quick-twitch actions in the box, swinging with intent throughout the weekend. He also impacted the game with his speed, creating pressure on opposing defenses. Roman has consistently performed well in PG events this spring. 
 

Giovanni Qualtier (2030, Bolingbrook, Ill.) delivered a standout performance for Hit Dogs Illinois 14U Busch, helping lead them to a championship. The 5-foot-5, 130-pound left-handed hitter posted a .364 average across five games, collecting four hits, including two doubles and a triple, while driving in seven runs and stealing a base. Qualtier displayed quick-twitch athleticism with a smooth left-handed swing and feel to go the other way throughout the tournament. He also made an appearance on the mound, running his fastball up to 77 mph while striking out six across 2.1 innings. 


Christopher Morrison (2030, Plainfield, Ill.) was another standout for WINDY CITY HIT DOGS 14U Hode over the weekend. The 5-foot-8, 130-pound right-handed hitter posted a .545 average across four games, collecting six hits, including a double, while driving in four runs, stealing a base, and drawing two walks. Morrison is a quick-twitch athlete who displayed present bat speed and rhythm in the box throughout the tournament. He adjusted well to secondary pitches while consistently producing quality contact.  


John Shelley (2030, Plainfield, Ill.) put together a strong performance for Go Pro this tournament. The 6-foot, 160-pound left-handed hitter finished with a .600 average across five games, collecting three hits, including two triples, while driving in two runs and drawing a walk. Shelley displayed present bat speed and feel for the barrel, driving the baseball into the gaps throughout the tournament. He also showed a patient approach in the box while using his speed to leg out extra-base hits.  


Mason Tuskey (2030, Plainfield, Ill.) delivered a standout performance for Go Pro, seeing the ball well throughout the tournament. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound right-handed hitter batted 1.000 across three games, collecting six hits, including three doubles, while driving in five runs and drawing two walks. Tuskey showed present strength in the swing, feel for the barrel, and the ability to drive the baseball with authority. He consistently produced quality contact throughout the weekend. 


Luis Salgado (2030, Chicago, Ill.) turned in a strong outing for WINDY CITY HIT DOGS 14U Hode during the tournament. The 5-foot-6, 138-pound right-hander worked four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three. Salgado displayed a quick arm with a controlled delivery, working comfortably around the zone and repeating well throughout the outing. The fastball worked in the mid-70s, topping out at 78 mph, and he mixed in a slider and changeup while showing feel to change speeds and disrupt timing.  


Anthony Ramirez (2030, Greendale, Wis.) delivered a strong offensive performance for Halos National this past Memorial Day weekend. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound left-handed hitter finished with a .667 average across three games, collecting six hits, including three doubles, while driving in a run. Ramirez displayed a smooth left-handed swing with present strength in the bat and the ability to drive the baseball with authority throughout the weekend.  


Kash Kerner (2030, Gardner, Ill.) put together a strong performance for Top Tier South - Schmidt at the event. The 5-foot-11, 145-pound right-handed hitter finished with a .857 average across three games, collecting six hits, including two doubles, while driving in one run, stealing two bases, and drawing two walks. Kerner displayed good bat control, staying short to the baseball while consistently producing quality contact. 
 
Nathan Casteel (2030, Valparaiso, Ind.) turned in a strong outing for USA Prime Midwest Select Stars during the tournament, working six shutout innings to help the team advance to the championship game. The 5-foot-10, 150-pound right-hander allowed eight hits while striking out eight without issuing a walk. Casteel filled the zone consistently throughout the start, pitching through contact and limiting damage. The fastball worked in the mid-70s and topped out at 79 mph, mixing in both a slider and a curveball to round out the mix. 

Ryder Goggin (2029, Lake Geneva, Wis.) turned in a strong outing for Halos National 2030 during the tournament. The 6-foot-3, 170-pound right-hander worked five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out eight and walking three. Goggin displayed present arm strength with a long-levered projectable build and room to add strength. The fastball worked in the upper-70s and topped out at 81 mph, and he mixed in a low-70s slider to complement the fastball. 

Gavyn Hartbarger (2030, Huntertown, Ind.) turned in a strong showing on the mound for USA Prime Midwest Select Stars, striking out six across seven innings while allowing six hits, two earned runs, and three walks. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound right-hander worked in the mid-70s with his fastball, getting up to 77 mph, and complemented it with a curveball in the mid-60s. Hartbarger worked the zone and delivered a strong performance as his team fell just short of the championship.

After an action-packed week at the 16u WWBA Championships, the tournament came down to two of the nation’s top teams battling for one of travel baseball’s most prestigious titles. No. 5 ranked SBA Bolts National faced No. 60 Alpha Prime 2028 after both teams reached the championship undefeated, but the SBA Bolts were the sole team to exit without a loss, defeating Alpha Prime 10-2 in mercy rule fashion and capture the national title behind dominant pitching and explosive offensive performances. The SBA Bolts were perfect throughout their week, running the table and going 11-0 while outscoring their opponents by an impressive margin of 108-25. “It was awesome,” SBA Head Coach Travis Thompson said on the mercy rule victory. “It just kind of culminated our week. Ridge Whitfield (2029, Charlotte, NC) stands at 6-foot, 158 pounds with an athletic build that should allow him to maintain his mobility and quick-twitch actions as he continues to develop. He bats and throws left-handed. Whitfield locates his fastball to both sides of the plate, mixes his pitches effectively, and keeps hitters off balance. He competes on every pitch and doesn’t back down in big situations. Whitfield threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out three on 75 pitches (58% strikes). He attacked the zone with a fastball that sat 73 mph and topped out at 78 mph, mixing in a 67 mph breaking ball and a 68-70 mph changeup to keep hitters off balance. Jake Karpell (2030, Holmdel, NJ) got on the barrel a couple times in game five and totaled three rbis. Started his production with a single then later on hammered a heater down the right field and flew around the bases for a three run inside the park home run. Keeps the hands inside at contact really well and got the head around on the homer. Runs well and can hit it around the yard in the approach.  Luke Sauer (2030 C, FL)  put his hit tool on display with a well-struck double, continuing to show why he is regarded as one of the top catchers in the class. The amateur players in the Cape Cod Baseball League are the future stars of the 2027 MLB Draft. The league runs from June 13th through August 2nd. Games are played at historic stadiums in Old New England towns. It’s beautiful and charming. Hollywood even made a movie about the Cape Cod League ~25 years ago called Summer Catch. It scored an 8% (!) on Rotten Tomatoes, but, on the plus side, it featured 2001 Jessica Biel in a starring role.  It was so much fun writing Coppy’s Column this spring. My hope is to highlight a pitcher and position player each week from the Cape.
