Coppy's Corner: April 23 POY Deep Dive

Each week I huddle with Vinnie Cervino and Craig Cozart  to discuss Top-25 rankings and Players of the Week. In Coppy’s Corner, I dive deeper into these Players of the Week, providing analysis from 20+ years working in baseball front offices at the highest level.

Player of the Week: Tague Davis – University of Louisville

Between 2016-2022, the University of Louisville produced 14 players taken in the Top 5 Rounds of the MLB Draft, seven of whom were taken in the 1st Round. The Cardinals haven’t produced a Top 5 Rounds pick since 2022, but that will change soon with Davis. Still only 20 years old and not draft-eligible until 2027, Davis continued his assault on college baseball this weekend with a 7-for-12 performance that included 5 HR. On the 2026 season, Davis is hitting .389 AVG / .489 OBP / .911 SLG / 1.392 OPS. That’s a 400+ point improvement in OPS from 2025, while maintaining a virtually identical walk rate (13.44% vs. 13.46%) and improving his strikeout rate (18.82% down from 23.46%). And there are other positive indicators. Davis has more than held his own against same-side pitchers, with a better performance this season against LHP (.415 AVG / 1.461 OPS) than RHP (.358 AVG / 1.308 OPS). He’s also hit much better on the Road (.419 AVG / 1.616 OPS) than he has at Home (.355 AVG / 1.234 OPS). There’s a lot to like about Davis, and, as he continues his breakout season and continues to rise up prospect rankings, look for him to be the highest player drafted out of Louisville in quite some time.

Carry Tool: Power. Davis’ .911 Slugging Percentage is all too fitting because opposing pitchers are seemingly in a state of emergency whenever he comes to the plate. Featuring plus-plus power from a massive 6’4/225 frame with natural loft to his swing, Davis has more extra-base hits (24 HR, 1 3B, 8 2B) than Singles (30) in 2026. Teams are always looking for plus-plus power, especially from the left side, and Davis can turn games around with one swing of the bat.

Pitcher of the Week: Chris Olivier – Lamar University

Okay, let’s get it out of the way. Yes, Olivier is a 6-foot, underweight RHP who will turn 25 years old (DOB 5-25-01) in about a month. In many ways, he’s the polar opposite / bizzaro world version of Tague Davis. However, MLB contributors come in all shapes, sizes, and ages. Following a Complete-Game Shutout on Friday, allowing only 2 Hits and 1 BB while recording 11 SO, Olivier has a 1.76 ERA and 80 SO / 19 BB ratio over 61.1 Innings Pitched in a breakthrough 2026 season. Olivier does it differently, pitching backwards and to his strengths, with the following fascinating mix: 864 Pitches, 248 FB (29%), 340 SL (39%), 149 CH (17%), and 126 CB (15%). What’s interesting is that his FB produces a 64 / 31 Groundball / Flyball ratio, and Olivier has only allowed 4 HR on the season. It’s a plus SL (more on that below), but his other off-speed offerings have also been productive as he has generated a 35% miss rate on his CH and a 33% miss rate on his CB. This is a different pitcher, in terms of age, size, and pitch selection, but it’s working and it’s really interesting.

Carry Tool: Slider. On the season, hitters are batting .043 AVG and .107 OPS (!) against the SL. That’s not a typo. And that’s also why Olivier throws this pitch 39% of the time. It flashes plus, with late break and snap, and has generated a 41% miss rate. This weapon gives Olivier a chance at the next level. And, while it’s difficult to project much on a small 25-year-old super senior sign, an MLB future is not an impossibility. Given his age and productivity, he should move quickly through the minor leagues, and if he can use the SL as effectively as he has in 2026, there will be a spot for him somewhere on somebody’s MLB staff.

Freshman of the Week: Drew Grego – University of Nebraska

Although I graduated from Notre Dame, I am a Southern California kid who knows nothing about farms or farming. That said, the Internet tells me that a combine harvester cuts corn stalks and separates kernels from cobs via threshing. “Threshing” is a good word for what the Nebraska Cornhuskers have been doing to the Big 10 this season, with a 15-3 conference record, and Grego has been a big part of that, including an 8-for-18 line with 3 HR last week.

Perfect Game has had Grego on our radar for a while and we ranked him the #7 overall prospect and #1 SS prospect in the state of Nebraska last year. Grego was also a prospect as a pitcher in high school and is a plus athlete with the ability to move all over the field. Lately, he’s been playing mostly RF for the Cornhuskers, a testament to his versatility. And this season, he’s been hitting .318 AVG / .393 OBP / .598 SLG / .992 OPS this season, a testament to his offensive abilities. Grego reminds me of a player I acquired 10 years ago in a post-deadline August three-way trade: the Braves sent Jeff Francoeur to the Miami Marlins; the Marlins sent international bonus pool slots to the Texas Rangers; and the Rangers sent prospect Dylan Moore, a versatile college performer who could hit, to the Braves. Flash forward to today, and Moore has over 7 years of MLB service time.

Carry Tool: Hit. I’ve always loved position players who pitched – Freddie Freeman and Austin Riley were two such players we drafted when I was with the Atlanta Braves – because I think there is an intangible awareness within their hit approach. Grego seemingly has that intangible awareness and – like Freeman and Riley – he also has the ability to hit plus velocity: on the season, Grego is hitting .333 AVG / 1.666 OPS (!) against Fastballs thrown at 93 mph or higher.

National Nuggets (things that caught my eye this week): Texas A&M made the biggest move inside the Top 10 this week, rising from #14 to #9 in our rankings (link the rankings) on the heels of a perfect 4-0 week, including a sweep on the road at LSU … the Aggies’ best prospect in the 2026 MLB Draft is Caden Sorrell … Sorrell has been playing CF all year for Texas A&M, and went 4-for-12 this weekend at the Box … the grandson of two ex-MLB players (Billy Sorrell and Tom Griffin) has improved each season, raising his AVG from .265 in 2024 to .337 in 2025 to .365 this year while seeing his HR total jump from 10 to 12 to 18; Sorrell has a chance to be a five-tool outfielder with average defense in CF and above defense on the corners, including a plus arm … diving into the numbers, Sorrell has strong – and virtually identical numbers vs. both left-handed (.389 AVG / 1.500 OPS) and right-handed (.393 AVG / 1.327 OPS) pitching … Sorrell reminds me a lot of Bryan Reynolds, who was a similar build left-handed hitter capable of playing all three OF spots with average or better tools across the board … it will be interesting to see where Sorrell lands on Draft Day, but versatile left-handed impact college bats with pedigree and upside are rare commodities, and likely to be valued as such by MLB teams …

Cali Mid-Major Draft Notes

Joey Cohen
Article Image
California annually produces its share of high-profile prep and college draft talent, but this spring also offered quality depth especially on the mid-major side. I wanted to highlight a group of semi under-the-radar prospects who have quietly put together strong seasons and caught the attention of our staff whether it was with in-person looks or just by some performance/data metrics that popped. The bulk of this group comes out of the Big West, with additional names from the WCC, WAC, and Mountain West mixed in. Matthew Thomas - OF - CSUN  Few hitters in the Big West have matched Thomas’ offensive impact this spring, as he slashed a strong .335/.411/.679 with 15 home runs. Long and still mostly viewed as a power-first profile, he’s taken a meaningful step forward in the hit tool, cutting down a bit on significant swing-and-miss concerns while increasing his on-base...

Camden McGill (2027, High Point, NC) had a great day at the plate for the Carolina Redsox vs. Wow Factor Carolina National 17u. The 5-foot-11, 170- pound center fielder has a solid frame. McGill bats from the left side with a short, impactful swing. He has quick bat speed, allowing him to get the barrel through the zone quicker. He uses his lower half effectively, firing his hips and rotating efficiently. McGill has had quality at-bats all weekend long, having multiple multi-hit games. Constantly battling and putting pressure on the defense. He finished the game going 2-for-3 with a single and a triple with 4 RBI on the day. Giovanni Luisa (2027, Weddington, NC) had an amazing day at the plate for the Wow Factor Carolina 17u Premier vs. Performance Carolina National/C35 17u. The 5-foot-10, 176-pound catcher has a solid athletic build. Luisa bats from the right side with a strong,...

For many players, earning an invitation to the Perfect Game Select is a dream. For Cooper Mason and Tucker Richardson, it became reality.  Now teammates on Traction Canes 14U National, the two Alabama natives have established themselves among the top players in the 2030 class. Richardson enters the summer ranked No. 10 overall nationally and No. 3 among shortstops, while Mason enters ranked at No. 44 overall and No. 13 among shortstops. Both earned invitations to the 2025 PG Select Festival, one of the most prestigious events in amateur baseball.  But beyond the rankings and talent, their story is built on friendship.  When asked what it meant to earn a Select Festival invitation last year, both players reflected on years of work leading up to the moment.  It felt good. I always wanted to make Select Fest,” Richardson said. “It just felt really good in...

13/14u PG Elite Scout Notes: Days 1-2

Perfect Game Staff

2031 King James (Cincinnati, Ohio) got the start on the bump for Team Elite against, coincidentally enough, his hometown Cincinnati Angels and delivered a 5 inning, run rule shortened complete game effort. Not overly physical at just 5-foot-8, 140 pounds, James came out showing quickness to his arm as he opened up in the 75-77 mph while working around the zone, mixing a bigger curveball with depth to help keep hitters off balance. Ultimately he struck out 6 on the game and walked just one while scattering four hits and even helped his own cause, picking up a double on the offensive side of things.  While he went 0-1 at the dish with a pair of walks, it's still worth talking about the performance from catcher Michael Wedgeworth (Flomaton, Ala.) as his catch-and-throw skills from behind the dish were on full display throughout the game, delivering a couple of strikes down to second...

Beast of the East Scout Notes: Day 1 Another good swing later in the day from ‘28 Derek Vazquez, this one lifted down the LF line for a 2B. So much to like about the profile & projects in every aspect. #BeastOfTheEast @PG_Coastal @PG_Uncommitted https://t.co/EDA8xhgK9G pic.twitter.com/kZDw8tPC5O — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) June 5, 2026 Derek Vazquez (2028, Charlotte, N.C.) has put together a big showing through two games for the SBA Bolts National 2028. The 6-foot-2, 183-pound shortstop/outfielder has showed defensive versatility throughout the event and does so with ease. He has all the actions at shortstop but also showed good range, tracking a flyball down the left field line on Friday. In the box, he’s uber-projectable in every phase and is already doing a great job of controlling the zone. The power should continue to trend up in the coming years and...

"Houston, We Nave a Problem"

Kinley Kitchens
Article Image
Some moments set the tone for an entire game. For Jackson Nave, it happened in his very first trip to the plate. The Sevierville, Tennessee native stepped into the batter’s box looking for a pitch he could drive. A few moments later, the ball was flying over the fence, giving FTB Phillies 13U an early boost and igniting what would become a dominant offensive performance. “I was feeling good,” Nave said. “I was just trying to find a pitch I could hammer. I kept my eye on it, took it down the middle and that felt good.” That swing was only the beginning. Nave finished the game with a home run, four runs scored, and four RBI as FTB Phillies 13U rolled to a 27-4 victory on the opening day of the 2026 PG 13U National Elite Championship. For Nave, getting the offense started early is an important part of helping his team succeed. “I think it is really...

Reed Continues to Prove He Belongs

Kinley Kitchens

For many young players, competing alongside some of the top talent in the country can be intimidating. For Chris Reed, it is simply another opportunity to prove he belongs. The Conyers, Georgia native has established himself as one of the premier players in the 2030 class, currently ranking No. 24 nationally and No. 7 among shortstops according to Perfect Game. Reed’s game has consistently stood out against elite competition thanks to his athleticism, instincts, and all-around skill set. That ability was on full display during the 2025 Perfect Game 13U National Showcase, where Reed earned his invitation to the PG Select Festival, one of the most prestigious events available to players his age. “It showed that I can play with the best of the best, and that I belong,” Reed said of the experience. The event provided more than just exposure. It also reinforced an important...

‘29 SS Chase Hallett (NJ) drops the bat head on this one & lifts it out to the PS for a solo HR. Free and easy LH swing w/ present strength & more to dream on. #BeastOfTheEast @PGMidAtlantic pic.twitter.com/Ym9LFg05tx — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) June 4, 2026 Chase Hallett (2029, Pennington, N.J.) came up with a loud swing on Thursday morning, dropping the barrel on one and lifting it out to the pull-side. It’s an intriguing profile overall with the young left-handed hitting middle infielder and the power projects in a big way. The swing is short and simple, he finds the barrel at a high clip, and is a sure handed defender up the middle. This has all the makings of a high-end prospect in a few years and is certainly a name of note in the ‘29 class. Canon Day (2028, Germantown, Tenn.) put together a great day on the offensive side of things,...

Really strong weekend at the plate, going 6-for-14 with multiple line-drive barrels, including a no-doubt pull-side HR. Medium, lean, athletic frame with room to add. Hits from a wider base from the left side, starts early and consistently gets to launch on time. Loose barrel turn with adjustability and length through the middle, showing the ability to create lift and impact out front. Coming off a strong junior season at Crean Lutheran and should be a priority uncommitted follow this summer. Evan Stroner (2027, Huntington Beach, Calif). Impressive...
