South Florida Giants Stand Tall

The South Florida Giants defeated Factory Select 4-0 to claim the 2025 17U Perfect Game Florida Select Championship. Under the blazing sun at the Twins Spring Training stadium, the Giants delivered a strong defensive performance and capitalized on key moments to secure the win.

Right out of the gate, extra hitter Zane Moody set the tone. His RBI single to center field in the first inning scored Patrick Campbell, giving the Giants an early lead. Moody’s approach at the plate was concise:

“Same approach every time I go up there,” he said. “Try to keep things simple, try to stay at a line drive and second baseman shorts, just stay true to myself and just keep it going.”

Though Moody’s RBI got the Giants on the board, he didn’t want to take all the glory. “It’s a team sport, so I don’t want to take the credit for it,” he said. “But it felt good to be able to give my guys a start in the first inning.”

With high expectations coming into the tournament, Moody said the team stayed grounded by focusing on the game itself.

“At the end of the day, it’s a game,” he said. “We’re all working for the same goal, all playing the same game. So, just takes a lot of pressure off when we work as a team.”

Later in the first inning, Moody came around to score on a ground ball to shortstop by first baseman Casey Crews, who drove in the run with a productive out, giving the Giants a 2-0 lead.

The Giants added to their lead in the fourth, as Casey Crews was hit by a pitch and wasted no time putting the pressure on the defense - stealing second and third, then came around to score on a single by Colin Ryan. Moments later, Stone Preston delivered an RBI single, scoring Ryan and pushing the lead to 4-0.

Crews’s impact throughout the tournament earned him the tournament’s MVP award. He finished the weekend with 7 hits, including 3 doubles, drove in 7 runs, and stole 7 bases. After the game, he shared his approach to during the tournament.

“Focus from the first pitch to the last pitch,” he said. “The boys in the dugout got us going, and we just played from there.”

On the mound, right hand pitcher Andres Rodriguez delivered a dominant performance, 5 shutout innings allowing just 2 hits and 1 walk in 55 pitches. Rodriguez kept hitters off balance with a mix of fastballs and curveballs. His fastball topped out at 80 mph and his curveball maxed out at 74 mph.

Behind Rodriguez, the Giants fielders put on a strong defense. Center fielder Stone Preston made several standout plays, showing excellent range to help keep Factory Select off the scoreboard.

Head Coach Jonathan Corbitt highlighted the team’s chemistry, noting that their proximity has helped them build a strong bond.

“Having all of them from the same area is a big benefit,” Corbitt said. “They’re gritty. They battle.” Corbitt also emphasized his team’s ability to stay composed under pressure.

“When we made an error, we didn’t collapse,” he said. “Pitching and defense were the keys.”

The Giants chemistry, focus, and execution carried them through the weekend.

“We came in, and everyone did their job,” Crews said.

When asked what he wanted to remember most from the tournament, Crews didn’t hesitate:

“The way we played as a team.”
