Blaine Bullard

Commitment: Texas A&M
Travel Team: Texas Twelve

Frame/Stance

Bullard has added noticeable weight and size this year and he still has loads more to build upon physically. It’s a long-levered frame with good scaps and length to continue adding strength. He has defined lean muscle with more physical projection left. Bullard starts upright with a higher hand set from both sides and a deeper hanging leg trigger into contact. There is a slight dip/hitch in the hand load but it works in rhythm and allows him to stay behind the ball a lot better. He’s done a better job of shortening his stance and improving his posture over the years, setting into his swing much easier and taking tighter turns at the plate. There is a bit of “stiffness” you can pick out in the swing but the intent and athleticism more than makes up for it presently.

“Tools”

You may be hard pressed to find a better athlete in the Houston or even the entire Texas area on the prep side, as Bullard is a high-end athlete full of twitch. He’s clocked sub 4.1 home-to-first times and shows the potential to be every bit of a 70-grade runner with great burst and easy, soft feet that glide. He’s an easy mover out of the box or roaming center field with routes and reads that project at the next level. Bullard can roam some grass up the middle and combined with the improved bat-to-ball skill from both sides, gives a good sense of both polish and immediate upside here. He’s an all-fields hitter with bat speed and a fast rotator with some quality swing decisions. He’s also a true table setter who can impact the game in the stolen base department. He has big tools, and the power is still coming along. He gets into more balls from the right side and drives the baseball harder, while the left still shows a more easier approach and letting the barrel play out in space. The power is still more gap-to-gap in every facet, but there is a bit of hope he can grow into more and impact the baseball harder as he continues maturing. The run, defend, and hit have really opened eyes since last year and the tools are present and quite loud.

“Buzz”

Bullard has garnered a good bit of buzz this spring, and it will be tough to steer him away from his commitment to Texas A&M. He’s one of the more impressive prep names in the Houston region who can potentially hear his name called during the early rounds of the draft come July. There is a lot to dream upon with the athlete and now tools, and if he grows into the impact some dream upon the upside is pretty substantial. At points Bullard hasn't’ faced the high-end velocity some evaluators may need on the circuit to garner the overall hit tool, but the spring has treated him well to this point and he’s quickly climbing up public boards. If it all comes together, an organization may just take the chance.

Overall, Bullard has the upside of an everyday impact player at a premium position in center field with a height run tool and quality bat-to-ball skill. He projects to defend at a high level and bring a quality hit to both sides of the plate while growing into more power. It may be tough to steer him away from his college commitment, but he’s been putting on quite a display this spring and could just change the outcome in July. The upside and athlete is quite evident and the overall tool set has him gaining steam.
