What Happened: This was Week 2 of ACC conference play as NC State hosted the Virginia Cavaliers. The Wolfpack lost a heartbreaker in Game 1 by a score 2-1 and had to walk off their opponents in the 9th inning of Game 3 to prevent being swept at home.

Carrying Tool: It should be the offense, but it’s been a tale of two seasons from the non-conference segment to the ACC schedule. The team slash line overall this year is .316/.582/.416 with 56 doubles, 41 home runs and 13 stolen bases but in ACC play that all changes to .274/.448/.347 and they have yet to swipe a bag.

Concerns: The pitching staff overall has performed tremendously, especially from a starting rotation standpoint. However, the bullpen is unproven and there are only two arms coming on in relief with an ERA under 4.50 right now.

Best Player on the Field: Sam Highfill. Coming back from a nagging injury that had him on the shelf for the majority of 2022, Highfill is taking on the role of stopper for the Wolfpack. The 6-3/200 RHP is at his best in high leverage situations and seems to have a naturally slow heartbeat that serves him well. However, don’t be mistaken, Highfill is a tenacious competitor, and he showed his resilience with two flawless appearances in the series.
