Team Sheet: Wake Forest

Craig Cozart
Players Mentioned: Rhett Lowder, Camden Minacci, Tommy Hawke, Nick Kurtz, Brock Wilken, Sean Sullivan, Josh Hartle

What Happened: This was the opening series in ACC for both Wake Forest and Duke and it lived up to the hype. There was very little breathing room for either team the entire weekend as it was very tightly contested in all facets of the game. Ultimately, the Demon Deacons came away with the series victory on the strength of their rotation and deep lineup.

Carrying Tool: This team is ranked in the top-25 nationally in team offensive categories like batting average, doubles, home runs and runs. However, the pitching is the aspect of this team that could carry them to Omaha. The rotation of Rhett Lowder, Sean Sullivan and Josh Hartle is going to give them length all year long and the back end of the game is in good hands with Camden Minacci closing things out.

Concerns: Wake Forest plays on a synthetic surface at home, and maybe it’s just coincidence but the Deacs have made 12 of their 17 errors this year on the road and on natural grass. They are much more athletic and mobile in the middle of the diamond than they have been in years, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Best Player on the Field: Brock Wilken. Listed at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds, the physical corner infielder has a Big-League frame and looks the part in every way. He has made strides with the glove, possesses elite arm strength and is second in the nation in home runs with (12) so far this season.
