Team Sheet: Vanderbilt

Players Featured: Enrique Bradfield Jr., Jonathan Vastine, RJ Austin, Davis Diaz, Carter Holton, Bryce Cunningham, Hunter Owen, Devin Futrell, Andrew Dutkanych IV, Nick Maldonado

What Happened: Vanderbilt took two of three games at home in a massive early season matchup with UCLA. The Commodores look to be yet again one of the best teams in the country under Tim Corbin.

Carrying Tool: Starting Staff. The starting staff shut down one of the most potent lineups in the entire country. It’s a true three-headed, all left-handed, monster of a staff in Carter Holton, Hunter Owen, and Devin Futrell. Combined, they only have up five hits on the weekend and registered 18 strikeouts.

Concerns: Back End of the Lineup. The top half of the lineup should be able to carry the offense a decent ways this season. RJ Austin, Jonathan Vastine, and Matthew Polk have gotten off to hot starts with Enrique Bradfield Jr. showing positive signs at the plate. The Commodores only have one other player hitting over .240 so they’ll need a few more bats to heat up later on in the year.

Best Player on the Field: Carter Holton. Holton was absolutely dominant in the Friday night start and looks like the ace of the Commodores for this year and next. It’s an electric four pitch mix with a fastball up to 96 mph and the ability to spin two different breaking balls as well as a changeup.
