What happened: Went down to Cal State Fullerton on opening weekend and won the series in dramatic fashion, winning the rubber match by putting up 15 runs in the 9th and 10th innings, winning 21-3

Carrying Tool: OFFENSE OFFENSE OFFENSE.  It’s a very deep lineup, not only 1-9, but there are plenty of options to come off the bench.  They can bang for instant offense (8 home runs, 16 extra base hits) over the weekend) and have table setting types that can manufacture runs.

Concerns:  Pitching, more specifically the bullpen and throwing strikes.  Fullerton was able to push across A LOT of runs against the pen, and even though Stanford was able to take the last two games, the Titans were able to put up some crooked numbers and threatened to put up even more.  Stanford was able to hang on and bash their way to a series win, but they walked the tight rope in closing out game 2 and put up a 7 spot in the ninth to put them in a position to win and gave up 2 in the bottom to go in to extra innings.  There’s plenty of arms in the 'pen, but they’ll need an arm or two to really step up to eat innings and close out games.

Best Player on the Field:  Can there only be one?  6 Cardinal hitters put up an OPS north of 1.000 over the weekend.  Tommy Troy entered the year as the highly touted draft prospect and performed as advertised.  Over this weekend though, in his first collegiate action, Malcolm Moore really impressed.  From his first collegiate at bat, a home run, throughout the entire series, he worked at bats, and not only hit 3 home runs in total he showed the ability to work the ball to all fields, not just a slugger.  He did falter a bit behind the plate defensively, but what he did in the box was very impressive for a Freshman.

Reports

Malcolm Moore, C
Very impressive collegiate debut for the freshman as he connected for a long home run to the pull side right out of the gate in his first collegiate at-bat.  Two more home runs in the finale for the former PG All American.  Very relaxed approach at the plate, starts very open.  Rhythmic load as he closes up and explodes on balls with exceptional power.  Stayed behind the ball well and stayed in there against lefty arm.  Will be fun to watch the next few years.  Struggled a bit behind the plate defensively at times but showed well overall back there.  Threw one would be base stealer out early in game, then had ball slip out of hand on a pop to third base allowing run to score. Consistency receiving will be key for growth.
