FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Behind a first pitching appearance of the summer, Burn Scout Team has propelled themselves to an undefeated record at the BCS National Championship.

“For Spencer Adams, that’s the first time he’s pitched all summer,” Burn Head Coach Mark Guthrie said Wednesday. “He's a competitor and he did a really nice job, we really needed to get him through three innings and he gave us a little bit more than that.”

The right-hander went on to deal 3 1/3 innings on the mound in his team's most recent win, a 5-0 victory over Sticks-Browning 2026, while giving up just two hits and striking out a pair.

This victory did not come without a few scoring opportunities for Sticks-Browning, having runners in scoring position in the first two innings and eight total throughout the game, but the Burn defense shut them out.

“Our pitchers made really good pitches in big situations,” Guthrie said postgame. “Both Spencer and Ethan [Dejesus] did great jobs with runners in scoring position, got balls in, got them to chase breaking balls. That's a really good team.”

Dejesus came on to relieve Adams over the final 3 2⁄3 innings. The right-hander threw a consistent low-80s fastball, while punching out five with his off-speed pitches that included a mid-70s changeup and high-60s curveball.

The Burn offense jumped ahead early, driving in two during the opening inning.

Gus Fusco picked up the first hit of the ballgame, and made his way home by way of an RBI single from Carter Cox.

The second run came courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Jonathan Carr to drive in Dylan Messina, who had singled three batters prior.

Carr wasn't not done driving in his teammates with sac flies, picking up another RBI in the bottom fourth, this time driving in Cox, who led off the inning with a double.

Prior to this game, a loss could have jeopardized their chances to advance onto the winner's bracket, but Guthrie was not taking that chance.

Now with a win and 3-0 record up to this point, the team is one step closer to hoisting a BCS National Championship trophy.

“The thought going into this was, we’re 2-0, we can still get knocked out if we don't play well today,” Guthrie said postgame. “We’ve played so well, the kids and team deserved to be in a good seeding and position going forward.”
