East Cobb Opens Up In The Win Column

ATLANTA, Ga. -- East Cobb Astros 17u opened up this weekend’s Southeast Elite Championship tournament with a 7-0 win against Ccb Monarchs. It was a smooth game for the nationally ranked team from start to finish.

Dylan Cupp, the No. 1 shortstop in the state of Georgia in the 2023 class, spent some quality time in the batter’s box yesterday afternoon, as he so often does, and was a spark for his team, as he so often is. The Mississippi State commit went 2-for-3 on the day, including a single that was part of a four-run effort in the bottom of the first inning and a double in the fifth inning.



After the game, Cupp only had positive things to say about his teammates and their performance.

“Our pitchers are really, really good,” Cupp said.

He was referencing Jackson McKenzie, Isaiah Mamea, and Walker Altman, who combined to shut out Ccb and allow just one hit between the three of them for the entire contest, striking out 12 hitters over the seven innings.

McKenzie, who is a fellow Mississippi State commit with Cupp, got the start on the mound for East Cobb and set the tone for the ballgame, tossing three innings, walking just one, not allowing a hit, and striking out three. His team jumped out to a 5-0 lead during his time on the bump. The Pace, Fla. native proved himself as someone fans should keep their eyes on for the remainder of the weekend.

“I’m gonna play my heart out, knowing that this is my last travel ball experience,” Mackenzie said after the game.

East Cobb collected 10 hits against Ccb, with other notable contributors in the lineup alongside Cupp. Tate McKee, hitting just ahead of Cupp in the order, went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Second baseman John Martinez was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as well, and 10-hole hitter Davis Newman added two knocks, along with two RBI and a run scored.

With McKee committed to play college ball at Georgia Tech, Martinez committed to Florida, and Newman choosing Northwest Florida State - and that's just a sampling - it starts to show how much talent is on this East Cobb Astros ball club, and just how big of a contender the team is this weekend.

East Cobb will be back on Field 1 at the East Cobb Complex on Friday at 12:40 pm for their second game in the Southeast Elite Championship tournament against Birmingham, Alabama’s 33s Baseball.
