SE Memorial Day Scout Notes: Day 1-3

RJ Cope (2026, Lawrenceville, Ga.), a 6-foot-6, 210-pound left-handed pitcher for the GBSA Rays 17U Premier Scout Team, tossed three scoreless innings in a start against the East Cobb Astros 17U. Facing a lineup filled with Division-I commits, the recently-graduated eighth grader Cope did not shy away from the challenge and went right at their hitters at a 60% strike rate. He used a sinking fastball in the 83-85 mph range along with a fading changeup in the upper-70s and a short slider in the 73/74 mph range. He avoided barrels by changing speeds and pounding both sides of the plate at the bottom of the zone. He allowed a broken bat double down the left field line to the first batter of the game but quickly settled down to strand him at third base by retiring the next three batters in order. His only other blemish was a walk for the only two baserunners in his three innings of work. A huge step in the development as a young pitcher against a potent lineup, Cope was more than capable of stepping up and keeping his composure on the bump and executing pitches regardless of the situation and atmosphere.
