2019 Pitcher/Catcher Showcase
Colton Smith is a 2020 RHP/OF with a 6-0 165 lb. frame from Bennington, NE who attends Bennington Secondary. Medium frame with a lean, athletic build and wiry strength. Frame projects to support additional strength. Primary right handed pitcher with a simple side step to high leg lift delivery. Stays tall and balanced on back side at gather and worked to the plate with drop and drive actions. Lands in line with the plate and carries momentum well. Clean arm circle at take back and released from a three-quarters slot. Fastball comes out of hand well creating late sink to the bottom of the zone in the low to mid 80's, topped at 87 miles per hour. Curveball showed 11/5 shape with tighter spin and sharp depth in the low 70's. Also showed a changeup offering that produced sink in the mid 70's. Consistently landed each offering within the zone and effectively challenged hitters while inducing weak contact. Right handed hitter with a spread, even stance and heel up trigger. Stays on back side and works to contact with rotational lower half actions. Simple hand path to baseball with a line drive barrel plane through extension. Flashed the ability to generate leverage when connecting with baseball out front. Displayed solid feel for the barrel and consistently worked to the middle of the field. Good student. Named to the 2019 Pitcher/Catcher Indoor Showcase, Top Prospect List.
