2004 Underclass National Showcase
Sam Phippen -- Phippen is an extra tall 6-7, 190 lb. sophomore from Colorado that you have to watch carefully over the next few years. He has athletic actions on the field and pretty loose, consistent and easy pitching mechanics for his size and age. Phippen threw his fastball in the 79-82 mph range and had a good idea of where it was going. His curveball topped out at 63 mph and had good spin and depth to it. There’s no telling how big Phippen is going to get and he already does a number of things very well that are just going to get better in the future as he gets stronger. Sam is a very good student with tremendous upside. He's only a sophomore and should easily be up in the high 80s before too long.
