30. Basic Academy (Henderson, Nev.)

Basic Academy hasn’t had double digit losses since the 2013 season and things don’t look to be heading that way any time soon. They won a state championship a year ago, knocking off a true national powerhouse in Bishop Gorman. They return two of their top hitters from a season ago in brothers Ty and Tate Southisene. There will be a few fresh faces in the lineup this year and as young outfielders Andruw Giles and Lyndon Lee both get ready for their first year, they’ve got the talent to provide impact. Another Southisene brother, Tee, will factor well into the pitching staff. The three Southisenes on top of the rest of the talent on the roster make this team more than hopeful to win another.

29. Brother Rice (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.)

It was a tough loss to end things last year as Brother Rice made it to the regional semifinals, but they’ve got the makings of a team that should surpass that mark comfortably this year. There’s a very solid senior group with tons of athleticism in the lineup, especially so in the pair of Dowd and Velazquez who should spark the offense in a big way. There’s more question marks when it comes to where the bulk of the innings should come from but they’ve got a group that does a lot of things right; they’ll be able to piece it together well with that group to win a ton of games.

28. Archbishop Spalding (Severn, Md.)
2022 Record: 29-4

Archbishop Spalding secured its first state title since 2016 just a season ago and they’ll look to make it back-to-back this year. They boast a big-time pitching staff with names such as Parker Thomas and Nathan Wines, both of whom are committed to play at East Carolina. The pitching staff is deep and experienced, giving them a legitimate chance to make another run at a state title. The lineup will have talent in the middle of the order in brothers Ethan and Jack McNally, while there’s a young player to watch out for in Cruz Luna who is one of the highest ranked freshmen in the country and could find a way to make an impact immediately if he gets time.

27. Hebron (Carrollton, Texas)
2022 Record: 14-18-1

Notable Prospect(s): SS/RHP MJ Seo (LSU), LHP Tyler Dobbs (Wichita State), OF Aden Howard (Dallas Baptist), OF Ian McCracken (Fort Scott CC), OF Lane Haworth (Wichita State), RHP Minjae Seo (Vanderbilt), RHP Marcos Paz, SS Austin Nicholson

Given the talent that was on this roster a year ago, it’s really surprising to see that they went under .500 on the year, but there’s lofty expectations for this group now. The Seo brothers, who are two of the most talented prospects in the entire country for their respective classes, transferred into Hebron and should immediately make a huge impact. MJ is a dynamic two-way; he’ll pair well in the rotation with Dobbs and others, while Minjae and Marcos Paz give them two of the top sophomore arms in the country. The offense is full of guys that can swing it well and the bulk of the lineup is headed play DI baseball; they’ve got a strong shot at still playing into June.

26. Jackson Prep (Jackson, Miss.)
2022 Record: 31-7

Jackson Prep has long been one of the powerhouses in the state of Mississippi as winning has become the norm with 21 state championships and now five in a row and the group this spring looks to continue those winning ways into 2023. They are led by one of the top players in the country, regardless of class, in outfielder Konnor Griffin. He’s a special player that checks every box on the diamond. Kevin Roberts Jr. is set to make his long-awaited high school debut here in a few weeks and can make an impact in a big way. Seniors Rives Reynolds and Duncan Mathews will contribute largely to the offense as both are extremely talented with the ability to change the game in the box. Graham Busbea will be a big piece of the staff after a great season last year with Griffin factoring in heavily on the mound as well.

25. Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.)
2022 Record: 25-5
Head Coach: Eric Borba

Notable Prospect(s): 3B Casey Borba (Texas), RHP Evan Miranda (Texas), OF Derek Curiel (LSU), RHP Ross Clark (Arizona State), SS Vincent Hudson (Arizona), 2B Ben Reiland (Oklahoma State), SS Gabe Fraser (Arkansas), RHP Brady Strohm, 3B Colt Peterson (Stanford), C Brady Murrietta (Texas), OF Josiah Hartshorn, C Richard Tejeda III, RHP Edward Park, RHP Jordan Cole

Orange Lutheran was the top-ranked team coming into the spring a year ago and although they don’t sit up near that spot in 2023, this is still a team with a TON of firepower and the mix of talent and depth to compete with anybody in the country. Casey Borba and Evan Miranda are seniors now and will have to shoulder a lot from a leadership standpoint while there’s a ton of talent in their younger classes. Derek Curiel is the top junior in the country; guys like Ross Clark, Vincent Hudson, Ben Reiland and many others will need to make big impacts. A real fun one to watch out for is freshman Brady Murrietta who has the talent to log big innings behind the dish. This team will be tested early/often, but if they can figure out some things, they’re dangerous.

24. West Monroe (West Monroe, La.)
2022 Record: 33-4
Head Coach: Wade Simoneaux

Notable Prospect(s): SS Hayden Federico (Ole Miss), OF John Pearson (LSU), 1B Trey Hawsey (Louisiana Tech), C Tyler Roark, LHP Bradyn Garner (LSU)

The Rebels are coming off a year where they took home Louisiana’s 5A state title, one that often makes its way to Lake Charles, and they did it in pretty dramatic fashion. The biggest contributions to that came from their young talent and some of those key components are again on this roster. Federico, Pearson and Hawsey are all some of the state’s more talented offensive prospects, each with their own aspects they bring in the box, while a number of others will look to contribute more in 2023. They bring back most of their innings from the team last year and if they can contribute similarly, they’ll be heavily in the discussion for the team to beat in 5A.

23. Houston County (Warner Robins, Ga.)
2022 Record: 28-6
Head Coach: Matt Hopkins

Notable Prospect(s): OF Drew Burress (Georgia Tech), RHP Andrew Dunford (Mercer), LHP Ryker Chavis (Georgia), OF Elijah Smith (Western Carolina), C Eli Stephens (Mercer), RHP Brooks Willis, 3B Kai Decker (Mercer), OF JT Withers, RHP Camden Cunningham

The 2022 season didn’t end the way that Houston County had hoped for as they were beaten in the Elite 8 a season after winning another state championship. The 2023 team brings back key contributors up and down the roster and they looked primed to make another run back to the title. Everything starts with PG All-American Drew Burress, one of the top players in the entire country; Burress led the state in home runs last year and might very well do so again this spring. The offense will be helped by guys like Elijah Smith, Eli Stephens and Kai Decker all of which are in line for a big season. Andrew Dunford and Ryker Chavis will headline their pitching staff as both have logged big innings throughout the years and will do so yet again here this spring.

22. Combine Academy (Lincolnton, N.C.)
2022 Record: NA

Combine Academy is one of a couple in our rankings that have a non-traditional form of how things are run for them with being a true academy that competes against high schools. Regardless, they put together a tough schedule every year and seem to find success on it. This year has some different faces, but the talent in the program is undeniable. Justin Best is a good senior bat and Meyer has some serious power in the arm while they’ve got real depth in the bats with Crosland, Smith, Meachem, Knight, Schwartz, etc. and some nice pieces in the arms with AJ Camp being a fun low slot lefty and some other righties they’ll be able to use effectively.

21. Lewisburg (Olive Branch, Miss.)
2022 Record: 23-5
Head Coach: Rusty Cagle

Notable Prospect(s): RHP Gage Haley (Mississippi State), 3B Samuel Richardson (Missouri), RHP Stone McCaughey (Ole Miss), RHP Cayden Baker (Baylor), SS Austin Hannigan (Southeastern Louisiana), RHP Matthew Osteen (Lousiana Lafayette), RHP Gunner Gilmore (Air Force), LHP Talon Haley (Vanderbilt)

A not so familiar face in the national rankings, but one that looks really strong this year, and potentially even stronger next year, is Lewisburg out of Mississippi. They’ve got one ranked senior on their roster in Gage Haley which is a good one, but their star power is in the 2024 class. Just looking at the juniors we know well, they have six guys committed to Division 1 programs; Samuel Richardson is an explosive athlete and is the second best player in the state, Stone McCaughey, Cayden Baker and Matthew Osteen play together on the summer circuit and all have big arms with the chance to miss a TON of bats this spring, and then you’ve got even more impactful players in that group, not to mention sophomore Talon Haley who can flat out pitch and has one of the better feel-good stories of a player his age that you’ll find out there.
