West Tops East at 13u PG Select Festival

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The West squad put the pedal to the metal early at the 13u Perfect Game Select Festival, hanging 10 runs up on the scoreboard through four innings and never looked back, winning by a 12-4 final score over the East.

Small ball was the name of the game in the first inning for the West, as leadoff man Jorvorskie Lane walked, stole second, and later came around to score on a fielder’s choice to shortstop. Nomar Torres drove in the other first inning run on a sacrifice fly.



Zayne Hookala smoked a two-RBI double in the bottom of the second for the West, scoring Carson (Bear) Calvo and Broder Katke, and the lead was 4-0 after just two frames. A one-run third inning, in which Maddux Lessard scored on a wild pitch, gave way to a five-run fourth inning.



Francisco Renteria walked to lead off, and Joshua Priest followed his lead two batters later. A double steal between the two scored Renteria during Taytum Reeves’ at-bat, who later scored Priest on a sacrifice fly. Katke walked later in the inning with the bases loaded to force in another run, and Carter Hadnot doubled down the line to right field to score Calvo and Noah Everly to push the lead to 10-0.

Logan Schmidt and Hookala held up their end of the deal on the mound for the West in the first two innings, both throwing shutout frames. Schmidt struck out two in his inning, needing only 16 pitches. Everly, William McIntire, Calvo, and Reeves all took turns throwing scoreless frames for the West, too.



Hookala, for his efforts on the mound and his double and two RBI at the plate, earned himself MVP honors at the game.

Despite being on the losing side, the East squad’s Caden Dawson had a standout day at the plate and in the field as well. Dawson was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk at the plate, and made one of the plays of the game in left field, ranging back toward the wall and making a leaping catch on the warning track to take away extra bases.



John Stowers showcased his power from the left side of the plate before the game started, winning the home run derby portion of the weekend.
