FL Elite Baseball Makes Final Run Together

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- As the summer season wraps up, this time of the year is always a bit more emotional for graduating seniors that are soon to represent new names on the front of their jerseys.

“Bittersweet,” FL Elite Baseball - PBC Platinum Head Coach Sean Maletzke said. “I've been with these guys for the last two years so it sucks that our time's going to end, we’ve only got two games left at most, so I told them to go out with everything you got.”



Platinum advanced on to the semifinals of the 18u Florida Summer Select with a decisive 8-1 victory over Freshwater Storm Red on Monday.

Leadoff man Wyatt Peters got his team on the board first. After walking in his opening at-bat, he made his way home from a Jake Marcantonio grounder.

Central Connecticut State commit Zack Robinson received the call on the mound, tossing an absolute gem in the win-or-go-home scenario.

The right-hander tossed a 93-pitch complete game, striking out double-digits while allowing just one walk and three hits, mixing a low-80s fastball with a mid-70s curveball and slider.

“[Central Connecticut State] is getting a gamer,” Maletzke said postgame. “The guy has got a three-pitch mix, he's going to compete every pitch and today he showed it, that team's got us I think five times in a row the last two summers and [Robinson] put us over the hump.”

Platinum drove in seven of their eight runs over a four-inning span, which included a four-run outing in the top of the fifth.

A leadoff double from Marcantonio kicked off their four-run barrage, needing just a single from Ryan Hopping to make his way home.

Donovan Glissen advanced Hopping to third with just one out, and after stealing second, Max Joy drove both them in with a two-run single that proved more than enough in the win.

With just one game guaranteed, and two games maximum left together, Platinum knows this will be their last time playing together, and does not want to go out with any regrets.

“Just competing, that's been my motto this whole whole tournament,” Maletzke said postgame. “We just got to keep competing, every at-bat we cannot take any off, that's all we can do.”
