643 DP Cougars Takes Home 18u Title

ATLANTA, Ga. -- When brackets were set after pool play at the 18u WWBA National Championship, it seemed to point toward No. 1 seeded Chi Town Cream and No. 2 seeded 643 DP Cougars 18u Pagan on a crash course toward the title game on Thursday.

643 snuck through the first two rounds of bracket play with one-run victories, and a 7-5 win over PRP Mambas in the semifinal earned them a spot in the championship.



Chi Town outscored its first three bracket opponents 21-6, continuing the dominance it had shown all week in Atlanta.

643’s Dakota Corntassel, who got the ball in the championship game, made sure that dominance stopped in the semis. Corntassel went the distance, allowing one unearned and just one hit to a roster that boasts 14 Division-I commits and was sitting at 16-0 on the year in Perfect Game events.

His squad came away with a 5-1 win to take home the crown at the 18u National Championship.



643 got the scoring started in the top of the second inning, with Ryan Wideman tripling on the second pitch of the inning and scoring three pitches later on a Gabriel Wuerth RBI single to center field. Wideman was again in the middle of things in the fourth inning, doubling home Jake Streeter and Dawson Campbell to push the lead to 3-0.

Campbell brought in another run in the sixth inning on a single up the middle to move the score to 4-0, and a fielder’s choice RBI from Wideman a pitch later gave 643 its fifth run of the game.

One run from Chi Town in the bottom of the seventh was as long as the rally lasted, and the celebration was on for 643.

Wideman, a Georgia Highlands commit, was named the MVP of the event. Over 11 games at the 18u National Championship, Wideman hit .556 with 15 hits, seven runs scored, and 17 driven in, including the three he drove in during the championship game.

The lefty Corntassel made exactly nobody sweat out the MV-Pitcher decision, as his work in the title game gave him the award. The Gordon Community College commit appeared in four games total, not allowing a single earned run over 10 2/3 innings, giving up just three hits and four walks while striking out nine.
