HS Rankings Update: May 17

It’s been the same kind of stuff for the last few weeks now as regions around the country continue to push through their playoffs with some wrapping up and having crowned state champions, Oklahoma and Louisiana to be specific, while many of the northern states are very close to beginning their playoff systems. As state champions are crowned around the country, we will begin to see the rankings shift more than normal with those teams being deserving of having their strong seasons recognized while there will still be many teams that fall short and stay deserving of national recognition.

It's still Stoneman Douglas (Fla.) and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s (Mich.) at the top as Douglas has still yet to lose a game since March before they won the NHSI, while OLSM now sits at 30-0 with playoffs on the horizon. It was tough to fill the spots behind them this week with many of the top teams falling in games, but the talent among them is tough to match. IMG Academy (Fla.) has been done with their spring and still sits at No. 3 while Bishop Gorman (Nev.) and Hamilton (Ariz.) move to No. 4 and No. 5. Orange Lutheran (Calif.) fell in extras in the Southern Section playoffs to newly-ranked Notre Dame (Calif.) and slides to No. 6 while the top two Texas teams, Tompkins and Rockwall-Heath, sit at No. 7 and No. 8. Calvary Christian (Fla.) fell in a rematch with Berkeley Prep and slips to No. 9 while Providence (N.C.) joins the top-10 for the first time as they now sit at 29-0 on the year.

Plenty of ranked teams have signature matchups this week and it is coast-to-coast with them. California’s Southern Section playoffs is down to four teams, all of which are ranked within our National Top 50. JSerra (Calif.), now up to No. 12, takes on No. 21 Villa Park (Calif.), while No. 33 Huntington Beach (Calif.) takes on newly-ranked No. 49 Notre Dame (Calif.). In Alabama, we’ve reached the state playoff rounds and the 7A title series will be a rematch of one of our PG High School Showdown championships as No. 30 Central Phenix (Ala.) takes on No. 39 Hewitt-Trussville (Ala.) while No. 11 Hartselle (Ala.) is playing for the 6A title. No. 38 Reno (Nev.) matches up with No. 4 Bishop Gorman (Nev.) in the state semifinals in Nevada, and so many more teams around the Southeast are just a few wins away from taking home their own state titles.
