Underclass Coastal Fall WS Scout Notes

Coastal Carolina commit Oliver Ellison (2023, Brunswick, Md.) was dealing Saturday morning, as he would held guide the Mid-Atlantic Red Sox to a pool play-opening win. Tossing four innings of shutout ball, the slenderly-built Ellison cruised at 83-86 mph throughout his outing, grabbing a few 87s. Displaying a full arsenal, the future Chanticleer punched out eight batters, only surrendering one hit during his four innings of work. Spinning his breaking ball well from the first inning on, the large right-hander was able to land his breaker in various counts. Operating with an athletic delivery, Ellison repeats well, maintaining his arm speed on his secondary offerings. With a quick, whippy arm that created tons of downhill action with his fastball, the projectability Ellison offers as a ’23 grad is intriguing as he adds mphs to his fastball before heading to Conway.
 

Future Mountaineer Aidan Smith (2023, Silver Spring, Md.) racked up seven strikeouts in his three innings of work in the Red Sox’s second game of the morning. The athletically-built right-hander possesses loads of present strength throughout his frame, using his long levers to extend down the mound. Working with a simple operation of a drop and drive lower half, Smith comes right at hitters from an over-the-top arm slot, hiding the ball extremely well. Cruising with his fastball in the mid-80s, the West Virginia commit displayed a plus slider that showed tight spin and tons of horizontal break. Smith mixed the pitches well together, changing speeds throughout his three innings. Showing the ability to miss bats, Smith’s pitchability and feel for his pitches resulted in an easy outing for the Silver Spring native.
