Fall National Champ. Scout Notes: Day 1

Austin Nye (2024, Roseville, Calif.) has had a huge summer showing the skills to be one of the top right-handed pitchers on the West Coast and those skills were on display again today, seeing him finish the complete game giving up only one hit and striking out nine. The large, physical frame is advanced for the age group and shows good strength on it already. Nye’s delivery is an up-tempo one seeing him driving from his back leg and getting over the firm front leg while repeating the higher three-quarter for all his pitches. Nye was able to throw all his pitches at any time and consistently changed sequences and doubled up pitches to stop hitters throughout the outing. The fastball (85-88, T90 MPH) shows strong angle, the changeup (74-80 MPH) dives off that fastball look and the curveball (69-75 MPH) is able to change shapes to fit situations. The breaking ball was able to show a late, overhand break like a curveball and also could tighten for a slider look showing bite out of the eleven-to-five break. 




Dakota Gray (2022, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) started the early game and showed off a very long, lean, and wiry frame. Worked from the stretch showing the ability to hold the back hip on a quick lift and rock at the top before showing a longer stride and extension out over the strong front leg. The shallow arm swing got to a higher, over-the-top slot consistently and showed quickness out of the hand with a good angle through the zone. The arm speed shown projects to keep adding as the frame takes on more weight. The fastball (85-88 MPH) was located to both sides of the plate and able to pitch north/south in the zone. The slider was short and spins quickly laterally while the changeup showed good arm speed and ability to sink it off the fastball. Both off-speed have space to improve and were good changes in pace to re-establish the fastball.
