Lonestar National Wins WWBA 16u South

EULESS, Texas -- A crooked five-run sixth inning was enough for Lonestar National 2023 - Pena to put away 5 Star Performance 16u National in the title game of the WWBA 16u South Championship on Monday by a score of 9-5.

5 Star grabbed three early runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a two-RBI triple from Ace Reese, who then scored on a Diego Luzardo single three pitches later. Lonestar answered with four of their own in the top of the next frame, however, and never trailed again in the game.



A single from Benjamin Merriman drove in the first run of the second inning, and a double two pitches later from Hudson Hamilton cleared the bases, scoring three, and put Lonestar ahead.

Aidan Coleman started the game on the mound for Lonestar, and after the three-run first inning, settled in and put zeroes up on the board his next three frames. He ended his day with the three earned runs and seven strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings, running his fastball up to 92 mph.

Six walks and a hit-by-pitch in the top of the sixth propelled Lonestar to the six-spot they hung in the inning, putting away the title for good. Blaine Birkelbach had the lone hit in the inning, driving in one on a single that got through the right side of the infield.

It was an incredibly balanced effort for Lonestar National 2023 - Pena in the title game, as not a single hitter registered a multi-hit game, but eight different hitters recorded one hit and seven walked.

5 Star's Gabriel Flores was named the MVP of the tournament, as he hit .526 with a home run, triple, two doubles, and 11 RBI. He also threw 3 2/3 innings across two appearances, not allowing a single hit, striking out 10, and only walking one. Flores is a Houston Cougar commit.

Hudson Hamilton earned MV-Pitcher honors for Lonestar for his work against the Cincinnati Spikes in the team's third game of the tournament, as he went 5 1/3 innings, only allowing three hits while striking out eight and keeping the Spikes scoreless.
