St. Louis Dynamite Claim Cardinal Classic

WARRENTON, Mo. -- After trading a pair of three-run innings through six innings, the St. Louis Dynamite put up a two-spot against the Rawlings Tigers in the top of the seventh inning to clinch a victory at the Perfect Game Midwest Series Cardinal Classic by a score of 5-4.

The Dynamite and Tigers combined for 84 runs of offense coming into the championship game at the Cardinal Classic last weekend. Not only were both teams riding an explosive offense to the championship game, but both squads’ pitching staffs had shut down opposing teams all weekend as well.



The Tigers’ Evan Damario and the Dynamite’s Mason Schirmer were the starting pitchers in this championship matchup, and each of them tossed scoreless innings in the first two frames.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers got on the board first after Brady Nolen, who had a .583 on-base percentage for the weekend, singled to start off the frame. Luke Sullivan laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position. Gunner Sutton reached on an infield single, which moved Nolen to third, and then came into score after Andrew Anderson hit a single to right field. Carson Clark was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After a strikeout, Mason Lee delivered a single that brought in two more runs.

Schrimer threw scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth, Damario threw a scoreless fourth and then recorded an out in the fifth before being relieved by Sullivan, who induced an inning-ending double play.

It was in the top of the sixth that the Dynamite came back to tie the game at three. Gavin Richars, who hit .500 on the weekend, got things started with one out and Schirmer came up with a single to put two on. After a fielder’s choice moved Schirmer to third, Jamison Lombardo came up with one of his three RBI on the weekend with a groundout to the second baseman. The final blow of the inning was delivered by Kyle Rehg, who doubled to left field.

The game between these two electric teams came down to the seventh. With two outs in the top of the inning, JD Dohrmann, who posted an impressive 1.038 OPS in the Cardinal Classic, lined a double to left field, which was immediately followed by another double from tournament MVP Ryker Benz to put the Dynamite on top. An insurance run was added when Richars came up with a single to center field.

Schirmer came back out for the seventh to close out the championship, where he was met immediately by a leadoff Trey Jozwiakowski single. After Jozwiakowski advanced to third, Damario hit a sacrifice fly to center field to bring the game within a run. Schirmer would get Carson Ramos to pop up to third base, and that would be his last hitter of his outstanding outing.

The Dynamite then turned the ball over to Lombardo, who gave up a double to Nolan Jaworowski, putting the tying run in scoring position. After a walk to Brian Gould, Lombardo reached back and struck out the final batter of the game, sealing a title win.
