Academies Showdown Scout Notes: Day 1

HS Showdown Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 & 3

Combine Academy brought home the championship on Sunday, basically raking the entire event. Isaiah Mack (2023, Cornelius, N.C.) is an impressively-built 6-foot-3, 205 pounds and he moves extremely well for his size, running a 4.55 on a turn during the semifinals. He has a balanced approach and really anchors his back leg to help create torque as he makes his turn and gets his barrel in the zone. The ball jumps off his barrel when it is squared and seems to be developing his pitch recognition as he continues to get game reps. Mack is uncommitted for now but can play both infield corner spots and the potential with the stick is too much to ignore much longer. Combine three-hole hitter David Zamora (2021, Hamilton, N.J.) seemed to bring stability and toughness to the relentless attack. He grabbed the momentum during his first at-bat on Sunday as he hammered a double into the right-center field gap producing the first run of the game. The right-handed hitter has a quiet approach at the plate and little extra movement to impressively produce the jump off the bat that he does. Zamora is not committed at the moment but can play third base and catcher. Behind the plate fits the best and he has strong wrists and good receiving skills.
