Wesley Mendes, LHP, Class of 2023
Commitment: Vanderbilt

Mendes may just be heading into his sophomore spring of high school, but he had already made plenty of noise on the national circuit for a couple of years, long showing both his pitchability and high-level athleticism. A long-limbed 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, Mendes was a standout at the recent Main Event Showcase, running a 6.84 while throwing 91 mph from the outfield and taking a strong round of BP from the right side. While those skills and metrics are more than noteworthy, it’s what the left-hander is capable of on the mound that truly sets him apart, as he shows a loose and effortless operation while the fastball velocity continues to rise. Up to 92 mph at the East MLK, the arm speed certainly stands out, and given how well he hides the ball, hitters just simply don’t pick it up out of his hand, especially when he’s mixing and landing his sharp breaker for strikes.

Outlook for the Class: While we don’t have an official ranking of the 2023 recruiting classes, it’s safe to say what the Commodores are assembling in ’23 has a chance to be special, and the addition of Mendes only adds to the crop of talent. Currently 12 players deep, Head Coach Tim Corbin and his staff have three of the top-10 players in the country committed and seven in the top-100, while Mendes’ current ranking falls just outside at No. 113. We know left-handed pitching is always at a premium, with Mendes ranking as one of the best, and he’ll join both Jakob Schulz and Alexander Clemmey as a trio of southpaws already committed.
