Nick Martinez, 3B/RHP, Class of 2023
Commitment: Florida International University

Martinez is a potential contributor on both sides of the ball for the Panthers. The strongly-built third baseman has been a consistent performer at the plate during PG events, hitting at a .329 clip since playing in his first event in 2017. The overall operation is simple with good usage of his lower half, advanced feel for the barrel and good pitch recognition. When Martinez takes the field, he simple does one thing and that’s hit. There is some lift to the stroke and strength within the 2023 grad's hands, so one would assume that some of Martinez’s doubles become potential home runs as he hits metal in college. Defensively he brings agile feet around the third base bag and good reactions to go along with his plus arm strength across the diamond. The X-factor for Coach Melendez and the Panthers could be Martinez returning to the mound where he has been up to 88 mph recently with some observers seeing the low-90s in bullpens. Martinez pairs it with a breaking ball that has the potential for a swing-and-miss offering as he continues to make his return to the mound. The New York native could be a true two-way piece to this recruiting class for the Panthers.

Outlook for the Class: Martinez is just the fifth commit for Coach Melendez and his staff in the 2023 class, joining the likes of LHP Ervin Soliz and a pair of in-state catchers in Danny Perez and Javier Gorostola. The Panthers have large classes coming in for the 2021 and 2022 grad classes so this class may start to add additional guys as the international signing periods and the 2021 MLB Draft take place. The coaching staff at FIU always is on the recruiting trail finding a good mix of in-state prospects to go along with the international feel of prior classes. If previous years are any indication, this class will continue to grow as college coaches are allowed back on the road.
