17u World Series Scout Notes: Day 1

Day two at the PG South WS featured more top tier pitching along with some late inning drama that led to some gridlock in the brackets.




Houston commit Diego Luzardo (2023, La Porte, Tex.) took a no hitter into the seventh inning for 5 Star Performance 17U National. When it looked as though he was coming out of the ball game at the conclusion of the sixth, he ended up coming back in for the seventh, only to give up a solo shot on his first pitch of the inning which ended his day. None the less, it was a stellar performance from a young arm who stepped up and showed just how special he could end up being for UH. Luzardo has a longer arm action with plenty of quickness with a down and back arm circle that comes up to a high three-quarters slot. His fastball ranged from 83-90 throughout his outing, however, he sat mostly 84-86. It’s impressive how he’s able to turn it on when he wants to, but that 84-86 range is more of his comfort velocity for the time being. He throws both a slider and a changeup, with the slider being the better pitch of the two. He rarely used his changeup throughout his outing and more so looked to manipulate his slider in different situations. Across body and away from right-handed bats, Luzardo’s slider is a plus pitch with a high spin rate and plenty of late bite out of the zone. He’ll also throw it as more of a get me over, yet, it did miss late in counts with that same get me over shape. The skies the limit for this young arm as pitchability and arm strength are extremely projectable for his age.
