Coastal World Series Scout Notes: Day 5

Todd Coffey
Coastal World Series Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Days 3 & 4

Brody Shawn (Alexandria, VA 2023) plays for the Metro Senators 2023 North and is 6-3 with a very predictable fame. He has a short, quick arm action from a three-quarter arm slot that generates great downhill action on his fastball. The uncommitted righthanded pitcher has a good lateral move to the plate and keeps the fastball low in the zone. Shawn has a few mechanical tweaks that could be addressed, but he should fill out nicely over the next couple seasons. With his fastball topping 86 mph, Shawn finished his day obtaining three strikeouts while pitching five plus innings.

Sam Lawson (Raleigh, NC 2023) plays for the Team Elite 15u American-Red and has a very projectable frame. The uncommitted righthand pitcher took the ball in the early morning game and was almost unhittable today. He has a hot three-quarter arm slot that really drives the ball downhill. Lawson mixed up his pitches well and kept the hitters off balance all game. He pitched a complete game going seven innings with seven strikeouts, topping 80 mph. There is some pitchability here, so definitely keep an eye on him over the next few seasons.

Cooper Newell (Chesapeake, VA 2022) took the mound in the semifinals game and was in control of the game from pitch one. The uncommitted righthanded pitcher has a high three-quarter arm slot with great explosion to the plate. He mixed in a good breaking ball with a fastball that topped 89 mph and sat in the mid 80's. Newell collected the MVP pitcher award as he pitched his team to the championship game by going seven innings with seven strikeouts.

Andrew Becker (Burke, VA 2022) plays for the Stars Baseball 16U team and was on fire from day one of the tournament. The uncommitted catcher was barreling the ball all week, hitting his team into the championship game. Becker went six for thirteen with five RBI's and collected the MVP hitters award.

Aiden Harris (Midlothian, VA 2024) plays for the Richmond Braves 13U National team and was quite impressive off the mound. The uncommitted righthanded pitcher was throwing the ball right by the hitters in the championship game with a very mature delivery and a very fast arm. Harris has late life on his fastball and was topping 86 mph while sitting in the low 80's. He collected the MVP pitchers award and should be fun to watch over the years.

Donavan Jeffrey (Chester, VA 2025) plays for the Richmond Braves 13U National team and if I had just one word to describe his week it would be “wow!” The uncommitted first baseman crushed the ball all tournament, which included two monster homeruns. This young man has quick hands, very good hitting tools, and enormous power. Jeffrey finished the tournament five for eleven with two homeruns and seven RBI's. He also earned the MVP hitters award.
