17U WWBA Scout Notes: Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3

Dallas Baptist commit, Ryan Johnson (2021 Red Oak, TX) started on the bump for his Dallas Tigers squad and although he showed signs of command issues, he shows huge upside. The righthander shows a huge frame, standing at 6-6 and is starting to show as lean. The overall projectability is extremely high. He works with an unorthodox operation as he shows short, choppy steps in the windup with a fast-paced leg kick and drive. The arm action is very short, and he generates a good bit of torque with his size. Johnson shows easy velocity as he was up to 93 mph early and even bumped a 94 mph late in his outing, proving he has what it takes to be a starter at the next level. He also mixed in a mid to upper 80’s cutter that he kept down in the zone and had hitters thinking it was his fastball often. His breaking ball shows as a sharp slider right around 80 mph that shows bite to it and has more tilt than sweep. He commands the slider well but his go-to pitch is the fastball. He was able to work both sides of the dish with it and blew it right past opposing hitters. Johnson already has the tool set & arsenal for the next level and will be a very close name to follow for the draft next year. He finished his outing with one punchout and gave up a couple of hits while going just 2 1/3 innings as they look to save him for bracket play coming up here at the end of the week.
