Bryant vs Walker as HS Prospects

These comparisons are meant to compare each player at similar stages in their prospect journeys in high school and not comparing the high school prospect to the current MLB star. 

Kris Bryant 6-5 205, 2010 grad 18.5 on MLB Draft Day

2009 PG National Report
Kris Bryant is a 2010 3B/1B with a 6'5'', 205 lb. frame from Las Vegas, NV who attends Bonanza HS.  Tall athletic body, long levers, very projectable strength.  Easy low effort swing, huge leverage and lift in swing, can hit them plus high and far, has serious hitting ability, can shorten swing to velo, quick hands.  7.00 runner, best under way, balanced actions defensively, hands are soft.  Power could be something extra special.  Corey Hart/Dave Kingman comp physically, but maybe better hitter.  Early draft prospect. Excellent student, verbal to San Diego.  Aflac All-American.

PG Observations
I recollect Bryant starting with very upright stance in HS and then widened out in college.  Has always taken approach to lift the ball and use his leverage.  Hit a home run first time I saw him at Underclass All American Games at USC.   He was a bit different than most all prospects I can remember.  Ball flew off his bat at National with different carry and hangtime than I can remember anyone else.  The kid just hit super long fly balls that went on forever. It too was with loose hands and little effort.  EASY POWER to say the least.  Not sure if anyone has shown the easy loft Bryant did.  I’m probably forgetting others, maybe Gallo, but my memory recalls Gallo swinging with more aggression.

Will always remember Kris Bryant's BP at the 2009 PG National. Such an easy swing that generated enormous power and was pounding balls off the seats at the old Metrodome.

Jordan Walker 6-5 220, 2020 grad, 18 on MLB Draft Day

2019 PG National Report
Jordan Walker is a 2020 3B/RHP with a 6-5 212 lb. frame from Stone Mountain, GA who attends Decatur.  Outstanding athletic build, long and strong with plenty of room to get stronger.  6.56 runner, has nice lateral agility for his size and will have no problem staying and potential excelling at third base, shows athleticism charging the ball, easy arm strength from a high release point across the diamond.  Right handed hitter, shows easy raw bat speed with strength at contact, fluid path, doesn't work hard to generated bat speed, extended out front, geared for the fastball, lined two doubles into the left field corner in the games, plenty of home runs in the same direction in his future.  Also pitched, threw a heavy fastball up to 91 mph, young mechanics but arm strength is there, future is clearly in the field.  Outstanding student, verbal commitment to Duke.  Named to play in the Perfect Game All-American Classic.

PG Observations
I like to compare Walker to Jermaine Dye at the plate.  Both are big, more upright approaches yet relaxed athleticism with loose hands in the box and shown willingness to hit to all fields. Walker’s BP at the PG All American Classic  was super impressive, bat looked like a toothpick in his hands as he routinely hit long line drives into seats without selling out while other players appeared to pop veins in their foreheads with max effort.  Besides both playing 3B, that’s what stood out to me and is most comparable to Bryant, the ease.

My first look at Walker came on the mound. He was young and lanky but he filled the zone. Showed things to like offensively and on defense in the same tournament...You knew it would only be a matter of time before it all came together and helped turn him into the high end prospect he is now.

He had already impressed at our tournaments but Walker really jumped on our radar in a big way at the 2017 PG Underclass All American Games. Just 15 years old at the time and so easy to project on. Has been a lot of fun to watch it all come together for him and has put up a 1.019 OPS in his PG Tournament career with 43 extra base hits including 6 HRs. If ends up at Duke very easy to see him following Bryant's college path is one of the best bats in college baseball from the start and first bat taken in the draft. If I was drafting for an MLB team would not let him get to college.
