USC goes into the 2020 season with a new staff, headed by former LMU head coach Jason Gill. It doesn’t take long to notice that there is a newfound energy in the program and an attention to detail which should help the Trojans make some noise in the Pac-12. USC returns most of their starting pitching, losing righty Connor Lunn to the draft, but appear to have some young arms to fill that void. Led by junior Kyle Hurt, who has looked every bit of the Friday ace, USC has Chandler Champlain, John Beller and Isaac Esqueda to round out the rotation. The ‘pen has some roles to fill after losing closer Chris Clarke. Walks have plagued the Trojan staff and could be the main thing that dictates their success in 2020. Offensively, the Trojans have a lot of interesting players all over the field, many with positional versatility to move around and play matchups, a good problem to have.

Kyle Hurt, rhp, USC (Jr.)
Hurt has provided two strong performances recently, one in an intersquad and another in a game against UC Irvine where he looked very good – he could be the top arm in the area if he has more performances like that during the spring. Hurt’s fastball has touched 97, sitting at 94-95 mph while attacking hitters. His changeup has always been a weapon and it continues to show excellent action with sink and fade, even at higher velocities of 87 mph. He’s flashed both a curveball and a slider in the past, breaking out the slider in this look as his primary secondary at 83 mph. It also looked like he mixed in a cutter at 91 with short, darting action, giving him five distinct pitches he can use effectively. Hurt is locked into the Friday role for the Trojans and if he maintains his stuff and command more consistently he could have a big spring, which could lead to increased draft stock come draft day.
