For the third time in the history of the Major League Baseball Draft (which began in 1965) the Detroit Tigers will have the No. 1 overall pick after enduring one of the worst seasons in history to finish 47-114. They finish with nearly the identical record as the Baltimore Orioles from a year ago (47-115), who played one more game. The Tigers' 47 wins, and .292 win percentage, is among the worse in MLB since the Tigers hit rock bottom in 2003 with a 43-119 record.

In 1997 the Tigers selected Rice righthander Matt Anderson with the No. 1 pick. In 2018 they took another college ace righthander, Casey Mize of Auburn, who is one of the top prospects in all of baseball thanks to an uncanny combination of stuff and command. Mize posted a 2.55 ERA in 21 starts this past season spanning 109 1/3 innings, allowing just 80 hits and 23 walks with 106 strikeouts across two levels of minor league baseball.

The Orioles, who finished marginally better than they did during the 2018 season, will have the second overall selection. This past year they used the No. 1 pick to select Oregon State switch-hitting catcher and Golden Spikes Award winner Adley Rutschman.

The 2020 MLB Draft will take place Monday-Wednesday, June 8-10. Stay tuned to Perfect Game for updates to the draft order as those changes are determined.

Tie-breakers for teams that finished with the exact same record/winning percentage are awarded to the team that finished with the worse record the previous season. Changes to the draft order due to free agent signings will be reflected once teams start signing players in the offseason.
