Michael Watt is a 2007 left hand pitcher/left hand hitting outfielder from Capistrano Valley HS, residing in San Juan Capistrano, CA. Watt has a strong, broad, athletic build, with a good lower half on his 6'1" 185 lb. frame that still has plenty of room to fill out and add strength. He was ranked #46 among PG National Top 85 pitchers and pitched even better the next week in Joplin. He is sort of a sleeper to keep a close eye one because he does not pitch like a conventional lefty. Watt actually pitches kind of like a power right hander, explanation forthcoming. He pitches from a 3/4 slot with a quick, loose arm and excellent, power type arm action. He also has a drop and drive type delivery and is in attack mode on the mound. Another way that Watt is like a power righty is that he can pitch up with his 86-89 mph fastball. It is not so much that the velocity beats hitters up in the zone, but his fastball stays on plane from Watt's hand through the zone. He gets good extension, making that 86-89 seem much harder. The reaction of hitters is that Watt's fastball jumps on them quite quickly. To complement his fastball, Watt has a good 75 mph curveball, with good spin and hard downward rolling action. His fastball raises the eyes of hitters and the curveball has that good down action after coming out of his hand looking like a high fastball. There are a lot of strikeouts in Watt's future. Watt's future would seem to be clearly on the mound, but no so fast. He can hit, with a quick bat and line drive swing plane. Watt swings aggressively and the comes off his bat well, with spin that results in carry. He is also a good outfielder and his arm works well as an outfielder. At the D1 level he is a two-way type talent for many programs. Watt would seem college bound, but he is an athletic and strong lefty with strikeout stuff, which should get some pro attention this spring. He ran 4.50 home to first.
