JUCO Notebook: February 27

Carson Bailey (2024, Richardson, Texas) worked up to 97 with his fastball out the gate and lived 95-96 throughout his short burst outing. Fastball got up to 2500 RPM showing subtle tail at times. It plays firm and gets in on hitters quick. Locates fastball well at times. He went to a change in the 85-88 range as his bread and butter secondary killing spin with good dive. Change produced 5 whiffs. He also mixed in a slider in the 80-85 getting upwards of 2500 RPM with it. Slider tight and sharp when around it. Also flashed a curve at 79. Bailey stands in at 6-foot-3 from a deceptive delivery that creates tough angles for hitters. He should be a big follow throughout the Spring with plenty of draft buzz surrounding him. He is also the Number 1 Juco prospect on the PG Juco board and currently uncommitted.

Logan Harris (2024, Kingwood, Texas) is another arm for McLennan that showed well in his relief appearance out of the bullpen. The 6-foot-2 DBU commit worked 89-92 with his fastball getting upwards of 2500 RPM with it showing late life and good arm side run from a quick and loose arm. He went to a slider in the 76-78 range getting upwards of 2650 RPM showing sweeper traits played sharp with bite. Also flashed a change here and there in the 78-81 range as a third offering. Change played firm more than anything. All 3 pitches move in different directions which makes for an uncomfortable at-bat in general. Looks like DBU got a good one here and should have a strong season for McLennan.

Holden Hering (2025, Mineral Wells, Texas) was solid off the bump for Weatherford in his outing and left a lot on the table to be liked. He opened up 96-98 with his fastball getting upwards of 2600 RPM and settled 94-95 working to all quads of the zone. It’s a lively fastball that comes out easy from an athletic 6-foot-5 frame. Fastball gets good carry up with life and produced a ton of late swings. Change was 82-85 and kill spin while also getting up to 20 inches of horizontal break. Slider was 83-85 getting up to 2600 RPM with and curve was 78-82 getting up to 2500 RPM. Herring has all the ingredients to be a highly effective arm with a ton of upside. He will need to harness in his off-speed command and control moving forward and once he does that, his fastball will play much better than it already does. Until he maximizes his off-speed stuff, hitters will be able to sit fastball. Herring has all the ingredients here and will look to be more consistent throughout the season. He is also committed to Arkansas.

Talan Barraza (2024, Alburquerque, New Mexico) was impressive in this lone look on both sides of the ball. Barraza is an athletic short stop who certainly looks the part out there. He moves well with lateral range and made some nice plays from there. He showed excellent bat to ball ability with a strong all fields approach with sneaky pop off the barrel. Swing is compact with good bat speed. Barraza was on the barrel often in this look and should have a good year for New Mexico Juco.

Brody Chyr (2024, Parker, Colorado) showed a sound approach in this lone look for McLennan baseball going line to line and showing a good 2-strike approach. He works the count well and shortens up when needed. He can go line to line with authority and moves well on both sides of the ball. It’s a short lefty swing that plays well to his strengths. He should be a consistent force within the McLennan lineup all year. Chyr is currently committed to Nebraska.

Colin Roos (2023, Sandpoint, Idaho) dominant outing going 5 shutout innings against a loaded Weatherford lineup. Fastball worked 88-91 playing firm and located well all throughout his outing. He went to a change in the low-80s often commanding it well and mixing it in. Also dropped in a breaking ball in the 78-79 range. He located well all game and kept hitters off balance. Roos is currently uncommitted and should have plenty of upside at the next level. A strike thrower who mixes well and gets outs.

Jackson Irons (2024, Arlington, Texas) has some of the best power in all of Juco and showed that in this lone look when he went deep to straight away right field. It was an absolute moon shot that just kept on carrying out. He handles velo well and can go to all fields with absolute authority coming off his barrel different. It’s a physical 6-foot-6 frame with an elite power projection. He is now batting .390 to open up the young season while slugging 7 home runs. He is on an absolutely torrid pace for power. Irons is currently uncommitted and is one of the best power bats still on the market.

Cayden Byrd (2024, Burleson, Texas) is off to an impressive start to open up the season. Hitting for average and power, Byrd is batting .351 and has slugged 5 home runs. It’s an athletic 6-foot-1 frame with one of the smoother lefty swings you will find in Juco. He controls the at-bat and has some serious pull-side power. The swing stays well connected all throughout and can really lift and launch ball with authority. He profiles well in the outfield as a middle of the order bat who can do a number of things. He is currently committed to Texas State and should make an immediate impact once getting there.

Kade Gambill (2022, Alpine, Utah) has been on the barrel a ton to open up the season now batting .382 with a pair of homers. It’s easy power to all fields with a clean weight transfer into contact. He can really lift and launch the ball consistently creating a ton of backspin and carry off his barrel. Gambill is uncommitted and should not be for long as the bat will play at a high level.

Lute Chavez (2025, Vail, Arizona) really impressed on both sides of the ball. Athletic catcher who can really catch and throw with good hands. He works good at-bats with plate discipline and solid pitch recognition. The swing is short and compact from the lefty side of things and showed solid bat to ball ability with good line drive contact. Chavez is currently uncommitted.

Kyzer Harrington (2023, Midlothian, Texas) can really impact the baseball with the likes of anyone. It’s line drive contact and everything comes off hard. He is now batting .406 to open up with 4 homeruns swinging a quick bat with good swing decisions and strong pull-side power. He went deep on a line to pull in this look and should be continuing this pace throughout the season. He is currently uncommitted but shouldn’t be for long.

Caden Mitchell (2023, Celina, Texas) has been awesome on both sides of the ball to open up. Currently, he is one of the best Juco catchers out there and showed why in this look. He caught a runner stealing and recorded a pop time of 1.98. He can really catch and throw and has an absolute hose behind the dish. He receives it well and moves well back there with athleticism keeping the ball in front. Simply put, you do not run on this guy. On the other side of things, Mitchell was on the barrel consistently and profiles well as a line drive gap to gap hitter who can get into power every now and then. Mitchell is currently committed to Oklahoma and should make an immediate impact once getting there.

Harlin Hovater, So, Meridian

Shorter look here, game got out of hand in a hurry but a pro stick. Feel to hit stand out in a quality lineup. Present pole to pole juice that shows at least above average. Track record producer at the level. Registered a pair of knocks and a free pass before being pulled. Overall, impressed with the barrel accuracy. Hovater should stick behind the plate with quality arm strength and feel for the game. It's going to be tough to crack the lineup at State, but he will be in the mix if the bat keeps up at the next level.

Brock DeYoung, Fr, Navarro

Right-handed hitting. Smaller and unimpressive physically but kid is a gamer. Flat bat path, pretty solid feel to hit. Good hands at shortstop, smart ballplayer. Has some serious flashes of being long term, above average defender at shortstop. Slashing .367/.415/.592.

Jordan Enyart, Fr, Ranger

Right-handed hitter was an absolute hit machine. Barreled up 93 mph and knocked the starter out of the game and followed that up with a grand slam. Kid is a legit ballplayer. Smaller frame with a second base home long term. Plenty of twitch, hit tool will be the carrier. Good bat speed with a flat bat path. Has some juice in there, but better as a slasher. Plays with energy. Slashing .357/.446/.482

Cody Palacios, Fr, San Jacinto

Physically advanced, good athlete, good reads in center field. Flat bat path, creates some carry. Like the player. Consistently putting the ball in play. Hopefully the power can level up. Aggressively smart base runner. Just the epitome of a gamer. Slashing .381/.480/.548

TJ Stottlemyre, So, San Jacinto

Right-hand hitting. Undersized but polished with a feel to hit. Really athletic. Could really pick it at SS. Has a chance to stick there defensively. Bat to ball has been impressive. Has slowly worked his way up a really strong lineup. Slashing .424/.524/.576

Danati Fronduto, Fr, San Jacinto

Left-hand hitter has been absolutely out of his mind to open the year. Ultra Physical. Good feel for the barrel. Lot of strength at contact, Initially worked LCF mostly, but has made some adjustments to get the air pull that was obviously in there. Bat to ball has been pretty exceptional for a guy his size. Pro body. Pretty high upside. Slashing .467/.581/1.133

Ashton Peshke, Fr, San Jacinto

Lanky frame, room to add. Very low 3/4 slot, borderline sidearm. Repertoire is going to be limiting but can be dominant two pitch mix. Fastball 88-91 (2200) with a ton of run. Slider 79-80 (2200) with sweep. Flashed changeup in warmup. Has pro reliever potential. 2.45 ERA in 7.1 IP. 10K

Keegan Chavez, Fr, San Jacinto

Towering frame. Good fill, maybe a chance to add a little more. Reliant on length, extra-long arm action into high 3/4 delivery. Fastball 89-91 (2000). Shorter curve 77-78. Changeup 82-83 (1600). Mixes stuff really well. Not overpowering but can really pitch. 0.57 ERA in 15.2 IP. 21 K

Cohl McCoy, So, Seminole State (OK)

Right-hand hitting. Smaller frame. Might be more room for muscle, but he's wiry. Plays with lot of energy. Good athlete but could probably get more if he transferred weight a bit more efficiently. Superb bat to ball ability. Other teams couldn't get him out. Biggest hang up: bit of a question mark defensively. Slashing .419/.500/.645

Kade Davis, So, Temple

Left-hand hitting. Probably the best JUCO player I’ve seen this spring, thus far. Buckets of loud contact. Not overly physical but fills out the frame well. Gets into his lower half super well. Explosive actions but makes it look very easy. Two-way player but should be an impact bat at the next level. Slashing .500/.593/.925

PG Draft: Favorite Position Group

Tyler Henninger
Article Image
Every draft class has its strengths. Some years its a loaded group of prep infielders, some years its a deep collection of college arms. In this year’s class, certain position groups stand out above the rest to us. This week, the draft team dives into their favorite position groups. Groups that we believe are loaded with depth, upside, and big league potential. College Infielders It’s hard not to get excited about the crop of college infielders in this year’s class because of who is at the top. Roch Cholowsky alone makes the group exciting. He’s got gold glove potential at the next level and an offensive profile that should make him one of the Top 15 to 20 prospects in all of baseball the second he gets drafted. Justin Lebron is another player with as much upside in the class. He is a premium athlete that can really pick it at short and has big upside with the...

Wolforth Throwing Mentorship: Article 64

Ron Wolforth
Article Image
What Do Barry Zito, Justin Verlander, Trevor Bauer, and Dallas Keuchel All Have in Common? By Ron Wolforth | Texas Baseball Ranch® | PG Arm Care Take a second and think about the question posed in the title before you read on. Four Cy Young Award winners. Four of the most decorated pitchers of their generation. What's the common thread? The first answer is obvious… they all won the most prestigious individual award in pitching. Most of you probably got there immediately. The second answer is less obvious… they all trained at the Texas Baseball Ranch® at some point in their development. Interesting, maybe, but not the point of this article. The third answer is the one I really want you to sit with, because it has direct relevance to your career right now: they all move completely differently. And they all attack hitters completely differently. Don't rush past that....

You like 6-foot-9 lefties up to 100 mph? 2026 Brody Bumila (MA) was electric in season opener, super easy upper-90s, multiple 100s. Easy operation w/ simple delivery despite size. Punched out 9 over 3, double digit whiffs. @PG_Draft pic.twitter.com/BChMhKIIhO — Perfect Game New England (@PG_NewEngland) April 2, 2026 Brody Bumila, LHP, Bishop Feehan (MA), Class of 2026 He's 6-foot-9, 18 years old, left-handed and was up to 100 mph (upwards of 3 times on some guns) in his first start of the year in low-30 degree temperatures. That's really all you need to know. Oh, and the opposing team arrived 40 minutes late. Coming off a state-championship run in basketball, Texas signee Brody Bumila made his first start of the spring on April 2nd and didn't disappoint in front of at least 40 scouts packed tightly together behind the backstop.  Knowing it was going to be a quicker look given...

He controlled the zone throughout the event in the box and finished with a 6:1 BB:K ratio because of it while also swiping five bags as well. It was a strong showing for Jelks, something that’s becoming common this spring in PG events.    ‘30 MIF Cohen Carter (TN) hits this one on the screws into the gap for a triple. DII/DIII/NAIA Rankings Update: April 8

Nick Herfordt
Article Image
We are past the midpoint of the college baseball season and the stakes are rising by the week. Conference races are tightening, schedules are getting harder, and the résumés that will matter in the selection room are being written right now — one series at a time. This week's most significant development came in Division II, where North Greenville swept Young Harris in three consecutive one-run games to claim the top spot for the first time this season, knocking Tampa from a perch they've held most of the year. It's a genuine changing of the guard at the top, and it's exactly the kind of shakeup that makes this stretch of the season worth paying close attention to. Across all three divisions the picture is coming into focus. In Division I NAIA, Georgia Gwinnett remains the standard while Taylor and Cumberlands continue to make their cases from behind. In Division III,...

Iowa Spring League Notes: Week 1

Perfect Game Staff
Article Image
Brooks Mitchell-Birdsell (2027, Atkins, Iowa) was solid on both sides of the ball this weekend. He was able to show a clean move working into it, with the feel to impact it out in front and drive hard through contact. He had good barrel accuracy with feel to drive the ball well, especially working pull-side. He was 4-for-8 on the weekend with a double to his credit, driving in 7 runs as well. Mitchell-Birdsell also put together a good outing on the mound, delivering 2 innings of scoreless work with 3 punchouts. He worked the low 80s with some run, flashing a mid-70s curveball with good 11-5 shape and depth.  Maddux Mueller (2026, Amana, Iowa) LH bat with plenty to like in the batter’s box, and he put together a solid showing this weekend. He finished 2-for-3 with a double, demonstrating both contact ability and the capacity to drive the baseball for extra bases. Mueller...

College Players of the Week: April 7

Craig Cozart
Article Image
April 7th Perfect Game/Player of the Week:  Andrew Williamson, OF, UCF  The UCF Knights (20-9) are coming off one of their biggest series victories in years when they went to Morgantown and took down the Mountaineers to take control of the Big 12 regular season standings.  The offense put on quite the performance and Andrew Williamson set the tone by leaving the yard in his first at-bat of the weekend launching a towering home run over the centerfield wall.  The 6-0/195 lefty from St. Petersburg, FL has one of the sweetest strokes in the college game today and when he goes, so do the Knights.  In the 3-game series, the junior collected 6 hits in his 10 at-bats, scoring 6 runs, on 5 walks, a double and he launched 3 home runs all told.  While he had a stretch earlier in the season where he was searching for his stroke a bit, he is getting locked in at the...
