3/30/12: Austin Maddox's two-way talents have been evident since high school, starring on the mound, at the plate and behind the dish with a power/power profile. His arm strength allowed him to produce 90 mph throws and 1.75 POP times on throws to second base, and 96 mph fastballs on the mound. His power at the plate allowed him to produce tape measure shots. A member of the 2008 PG/Aflac All-American Classic, here is what I wrote about Maddox after that event: “Austin Maddox looked good as a pitcher, a hitter and as a catcher. I had heard quite a bit about his arm strength and he did not disappoint. I think at some point in time he is going to have to choose between catching or pitching so he can focus on one craft or the other, because at this point in time he seems to be more of a raw talent.” That prognostication rang true initially. After he slipped to the 37th round (Rays) of the 2009 draft, he decided to honor his commitment to Florida. He was part of an incredibly talented recruiting class and the beginning of many for Gators Head Coach Kevin O'Sullivan. Current teammates Mike Zunino, Hudson Randall, Brian Johnson and Nolan Fontana were part of that banner class, and those five players could all be taken in the top two rounds of this year's draft. Maddox adjusted quickly to an everyday role as part of the Gators lineup, sliding from behind the plate to third base due to Zunino's advanced defensive skills. Maddox hit .333 with 17 home runs and 72 RBI on his way to being named the SEC freshman of the year. His sophomore year didn't go as well, hitting .280 with 6 home runs while adjusting to the new BBCOR bats as well as a new position, sliding over to first base with Preston Tucker moving to right field. After not taking the mound at all during his first year with the Gators, the coaching staff decided to take advantage of his powerful right arm. He made 21 appearances out of the bullpen, including five scoreless appearances in the postseason, recording five saves and garnering more and more time on the mound as he continued to record outs. He did so mostly with his fastball, and due to that success he entered this year as the Gators closer. He worked hard in the offseason to improve his delivery as well as both his slider and changeup, and the improvements have been notable as detailed in Kendall Rogers' early season report. He throws his fastball as hard as 97, routinely working at 93-94 while also learning to add late, boring action to the pitch. His slider has devastating two-plane break, violently diving down and away from right-handed hitters with mid-80s velocity. Maddox also throws a pretty good low-80s changeup in which he maintains his arm speed, giving him one more pitch that makes him that much harder to hit, and also giving reason to believe he could be groomed as a starter as the next level. His stature also supports a switch to the starting rotation, built country strong with thick proportions and a barrel chest with the idea that his frame could sustain his velocity deep into ballgames. More of a max effort thrower prior to this season, Maddox has worked hard to smooth out his mechanics and arm action to the point where he is no longer viewed as just a one inning specialist. Due to his development as a pitcher, Maddox hasn't seen as much time at the plate this year. He has hit .343 in 35 at-bats through the end of March, and it appears his value moving forward to the next level is on the mound. He is expected to be taken in the latter half of the first round to the early parts of the sandwich round of this year's draft.

Austin Maddox is a 2009 C/P with a 6'3'', 220 lb. frame from Jacksonville, FL who attends Eagle's View Academy. Maddox has a big strong build and an absolute cannon behind the plate. His throws were 90mph from behind the plate not just in the workout but also between innings of the game. He shows ability behind the plate receiving and he is very quick for his size popping a 1.75. He has big time power potential at the plate and can drive the ball out of any park. He shows good leverage in his swing and creates easy power. He also got on the mound and pitched 91-94 and showed off his arm strength. Maddox has great tools and is a top two way guy in the 2009 class. He is an outstanding student and has made a verbal commitment to the Florida Gators. Aflac All American
