2005 Academic Showcase
Simpkins is a 6-1, 165 lb shortstop from Florida with a slender build. He showed very good speed, running 6.97 on the wet, slow track, probably an equivalent of at least 6.80 under normal conditions. He threw 80 mph across the diamond during infield drills. Simpkins has athletic actions at shortstop with good carry on his throws and a nice ability to flip the ball strongly and accurately. He should develop into a solid defender at the next level. Offensively, Simpkins has good balance at the plate and shows a willingness and ability to make contact to all fields. He lacks the strength at present to drive the ball consistently but can handle the bat head. He’s listed as a switch hitter but only hit from the right side at the showcase. Simpkins also threw an inning in relief, showing an easy, athletic side arm delivery and a sinking 80 mph fastball. Also a good student.
