Chris Schaeffer is a 2006 catcher from John Carroll HS in Port St. Lucie, FL, with a 6'0", 185 lb. frame. He has good present strength and flexability and nice quickness in his shifting and release on defense. He did a very nice job of handling pitchers at the National and receives the ball smoothly and easily. Schaeffer threw 77 mph in drills with a best pop time of 1.92. He ran the 60 in a quick 7.24 for a catcher. At the plate, Schaeffer hits from a spread stance with a short, quick swing. He has good quickness and strength in his hands and hits the ball hard out in front. Schaeffer showed some pop to the opposite field and should be a consitent contributor with the bat because of his short, crisp path to the ball. No single tool stands out for Schaeffer but he does everything well on the field, shows leadership ability and knows how to play the game. Coaches at the next level will enjoy having him on their team. Schaeffer is also a good student.

Schaeffer is a junior right handed hitting catcher from Florida. He has good present strength and looks bigger and stronger than his listed size. We're very impressed by his defensive tools and skills. Schaeffer is a good athlete with body life and quickness. He ran the 60 in 7.47 in Fort Myers but we've seen him faster than that. He threw 80 mph in the catching drills with a low pop time of 1.91. Schaeffer throws out runners in games and has handled top flight pitchers with ease. Offensively, Schaeffer has a rock back load and moves strongly through the ball on his swing. He has very strong hands and the ball jumps off his bat to all fields. He'll show gap to gap power that should turn into home run power in the future, especially with the metal in his hands. Overall, Schaeffer is a very well rounded catching prospect with good tools and skills across the board. Very good high level follow.
