Nolan Arenado is a 2009 SS/1B/3B with a 6'1'', 187 lb. frame from Lake Forrest, CA who attends El Toro HS. He was selected as a Top Prospect and when it is all said and done, he just is going to surpass some of the players ranked ahead of him at this event. Arenado has a strong, physical athletic body and is going to get even stronger. He is a high level hitter with the chance to be a middle of the line-up run producer for most of his career. He has plus hands that are strong and quick. Arenado has a flat swing, stays inside the ball well, and creates really good leverage He has outstanding barrel awareness and showed gap to gap power. Frankly, he looks like he will mash for a long time. Defensively he plays shortstop in high school but all his tools and abilities project to 3rd base. He has a strong arm and showed good actions in the field. Arenado does have a nice first step and plays shortstep well, which indicates that he just might be a plus defensive 3rd baseman and his bat will certainly play at that position. He also pitched in the event and showed a strong arm on the mound as well. His fastball was heavy and 84-86 mph. Arenado showed feel for the game/pitching by subtracting off his best fastball and by also changing arm angles from time to time. Most of the time he pitched from a 3/4 slot. His curevball (71 mph) has two-plane rolling action. He competes well and could be a good college reliever, possibly a closer if someone wanted to develop him more on the mound. Arenado is a good D1 prospect and might also get some pro attention in the spring of '09.
