Jon Luke Jacobs is a 2007 right hand pitcher from Jackson HS, residing in Gainestown, AL. He has an average build on his 6'0" 175 lb. frame. Being an 6'0" right hander did not hold Jacobs back from being ranked #60 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. He pitches from a 3/4 slot and has a loose arm and a good delivery. On the back side of his arm stroke he dips to extension and from there creates good arm speed. On the front side he gets to good extension, giving his stuff good late life in the zone. Jacobs' arm stroke is similar to San Diego Padres right hander Jake Peavy. He has a mid-80s fastball that topped at 88 mph. There was good sink on his fastball and Jacobs should have little trouble getting a ton of ground balls. He did a nice job of mixing in a wide sweeping slurve type breaking ball that was 71-75 mph. That pitch had decent bite and good down angle at plate. It is a pitch that is capable of being an out pitch. Jacobs also showed that he has a nice 81 mph change-up that he can keep down in the zone. Most impressive is that he kept all his stuff down. He is a quality sinker/slider type and should get plenty of attention from D1 programs. Look for him to develop a bit more velocity in college and if he keeps the same type of stuff, with a few more mph he should be attractive to pro ball as a middle relief type. Pitchers like Jacobs that have sinker/slider stuff that is lively at the plate generally have success against wood bats.
