Brent Caviness is a 2007 2B/C/3B with a 6'0'', 155 lb. frame from Cedar Rapids IA, who attends Kennedy HS. He has a slender low waisted body with developing strength. Caviness is a very fundamentally sound player who performs well in game situations. He ran the 60 in 7.53 and threw 66 mph in drills with a best pop time of 2.21. Caviness has a low, slinging arm action but throws out lots of runners because he has a very accurate arm and he's going to give the infielder a chance to make a tag. He also played some second base and showed very good range, hands and natural infield actions at that position, which we weren't aware of before. Offensively, Caviness has good balance and coil in his approach and an aggressive line drive swing. He keeps things simple and squares up on the ball consistently to all fields. He doesn't have the strength right now to drive the ball but is going to compete with the bat. Caviness likes to play and has fun on the field. He is also a good student.

Brent "B.J." Caviness is a 5-11, 150 lb junior catcher from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. We've seen Caviness frequently in the Iowa Spring and Fall Leagues in the past and at other showcases, but this is the best we've seen him play. He was really at the top of his game. Caviness is still developing his arm strength but has very good quickness behind the plate and makes very accurate throws. He threw many runners out during the showcase games with tag throws. He uses his quickness well in shifting and blocking and gives 100% effort at all times. Where he really stepped up his game was offensively. Caviness has a short, quick swing at the plate and has increased his hand and upper body strength. He uses his hands to hit and makes very consistent sharp, crisp contact to all fields. His best power is to RCF and he drove a few balls there well. Caviness has a great approach to the game, plays hard and has fun on the baseball field. He is a good student as well.

Caviness is a 5-9, 145 lb sophomore catcher from Iowa. His brother has been involved in Perfect Game events and leagues for some time and Brent is following in his foot steps. Caviness’s best tool behind the plate is his quickness. He has a quick release on his throws and moves well behind the plate. His arm strength is still developing but his release enabled him to throw 2.35 in workouts and 2.45 in games. At the plate, Caviness has a quick, short line drive stroke and does a good job making contact to the middle of the field and manipulating the bat head. More physical strength is obviously going to help him both offensively and defensively. He's tough and he's a gamer.
