Kyle Payne is a 6-0, 165 lb senior right handed pitcher from Canada. He's a submariner in the true Chad Bradford style, even down to imitating Bradford's bent over "pre-set" position that he starts from. We didn't check Payne's knuckles for evidence of scrapping the dirt on the way through his delivery but it wouldn't have surprised us if there were signs. Payne's fastball was up to 78 mph but he loses command and movement at that speed and his fastball moves best around 75 mph. He throws a 67 mph sweeping slider that has good spin and surprisingly gets some downward plane to it, although we don't understand the physics with that. Payne didn't throw a change up but this would be a big, big pitch for him if he was able to master one. Hitters are already uncomfortable facing him but don't really have any timing issues once they make their adjustments. Very few pitchers throw with this style, though, and Payne can be very effective in relief against any lineup if used properly. He's also a good student.

Kyle Payne is a 2006 RHP from Holy Trinity H.S. in Bradford, ON, with a 6'0'', 165 lb. frame. He has a slender upper half and some lower body strength and development. Payne throws from a submarine release point, with a short, compact wind up and a short, balanced finish. Payne's fastball has good velocity for his pitching style at 78 mph and he gets very good running and sinking action into right handed hitters. His change up is 69 mph and has the same sort of run and sink, only softer in velocity. We didn't see a breaking ball. Payne hides the ball well and keeps the ball low in the strike zone, where hitters just hammer it into the ground. Payne's style has proven it can work at the next level if you have consistency and pitch to your strengths and Payne did that. He's a good prospect for the right college program. Payne is also a good student.
