Lucas Herbst is a 2008 OF/LHP with a 5'11'', 165 lb. frame from Monterey, CA who attends Monterey HS. He has a medium frame and a loose, slender build and a mature look to him. Herbst doesn't look especially athletic but he's deceptively quick and strong and plays above his speed and tools. He can really play centerfield and gets very good jumps on balls and runs precise routes. His throwing arm is accurate and he gets rid of the ball quickly. Offensively, Herbst has a quick line drive stroke and stays behind the ball with good balance at contact. He really shows the ability to handle the bat head and hit the ball hard to all fields and the ball comes off his bat with surprising authority. Herbst had the chance to hit off some high velocity pitchers in Cincinnati and had no problem turning on 92-93 mph fastballs and getting his hands through. He looks like a high average type hitter who's speed and baserunning ability might work best at the top of the order at the next level. Herbst is fun to watch because of his high energy approach to the game and the skills he brings to the field. He's a high performance player who should continue to surprise those who underestimate him. He has a verbal commitment to Santa Clara.

Lucas Herbst is a 2008 LHP/OF with a 5'11'', 162 lb. frame from Monterey CA, who attends Monterey HS. He was selected as a Top Prospect at this event based upon his two-way abilities and what looks to be a strong upside at the college level. Herbst hails from the same high school as another former two-way high school standout, Joey Parigi, now at ASU. Similarly to Parigi, Herbst's is a prospect both on the mound and at the plate, though he is more refined as a pitcher. He has a lanky, athletic build with long arms, and an average to medium frame. Herbst's arm works easily and quickly. He tops out around 84-85 mph now and pitches in the 81-83 mph range. With his arm action and arm speed, expect his velocity to spike into the upper-80s by the end of 2007. Herbst has feel for three quailty D1 pitches, including that fastball, a cureveball and a change-up. He pitches to both sides of the plate and understands how and when to mix his pitches. Frankly, even if he never does throw harder (and he will), he can be a starter at the D1 level. His frontside extension gives his fastball some late life and sink and allows him to get good spin and depth on the curveball (70-71 mph). Herbst has a slight cross body delivery and can at times cut off his hips, sapping some power from his body. Howver, he pitches with easy effort and has excellent pitchability. As an offensive player his strengths are a line drive, gap to gap stroke and good bat speed. There is a bit of a hitch in his pre-pitch load that could cause a coach or scout some concern, but he tends to come out of it well and hits with great results. His 60 yard speed grades less than his usable baseball speed. Defensively Herbst is an outstanding centerfielder that gets excellent jumps and take precise routes. He may not fly like some want a centerfielder too, but he can play out there with just about anyone. Herbst's instincts are even better than his ability and skill level, which are both high. He competes like a winner and should continue to get better and better. His tools grade out well across the board as an elite college prospect.

Lucas Herbst is a 2008 LHP/OF with a 5'11'', 162 lb. frame from Monterey CA, who attends Monterey HS. Selected as a Top Prospect at this event. Herbst is one of the top two-way players on the West Coast. He is talented and has excellent feel for the game. Physically he has an athletic, wiry strong and athletic body, with some room to fill out. On the mound Herbst is one of the more polished pitchers in the '08 class. His fastball command is advanced for a high school pitcher, as his his feel for his secondary stuff. Even more impressive is his ability to set-up his pitches and his ability to finish hitters. Herbst has a quick arm and can be expected to make a jump into the mid-80s this summer. He can throw his curveball to both sides of the plate and his change-up dives to the bottom of the zone. As a hitter Herbst is a spray line drive hitter with a quick bat and very good hands. He flashes some pullside pop but otherwise is a high average type of line drive hitter. He also possesses excellent baserunning instincts. Herbst runs well, though maybe not like a true speed type of of centerfielder, but his instincts, jumps, and angles are all exceptional, making him an outstading defensive centerfielder. He has a strong arm and a quick release and should rack up the assists during his college career. There is little Herbst cannot do on the field. He is an excellent baseball player and is still going to get better, bigger, and stronger.

Lucas Herbst is a 2008 left hand hitting outfielder/left handed pitcher from Monterey HS, residing in Monterey, CA. Named a Top Prospect at this event. Herbst has a 6'0" 160 lb. frame and an lean, athletic body that still has room to fill out. His arms are long and he moves pretty fluidly on the field. His combination of physical ability, baseball savvy, and polish, along with still having significant upside is quite rare to find in a young player. Herbst is one of the more complete two-way prospects in the '08 class and will be highly sought after by top D1 programs. When you see him pitch it would be easy to peg him as a pitcher only but that would be a mistake and a discredit to his ability as an offensive player. Herbst is a talented hitter and above average runner with plus instincts. He consistently stays inside the ball with an aggressive swing that starts with an easy trigger. His bat speed is good and he has an easy, flat swing that creates spin off the bat, resulting in carry into and through the gaps. Herbst hits the ball hard to all fields and his power will come as he continues to get stronger. His swing and approach are very good. Defensively he has a quick release, a strong, accurate arm and makes low-trajectory throws. He has a plus approach to the ball and can play any of the three outfield spots in a well-above average fashion. His speed and instincts give him a chance to play centerfield, though as a two-way prospect he is better off in left where the wear and tear on the body is lessened. On the mound Herbst has a clean, long arm stroke and good arm speed. His delivery is athletic and fluid and his mechanics are excellent, with a lower half that works well and allows him to lessen the effort on his arm. Herbst has plus pitchability and a full repertoire of above average pitches. He can spot his fastball on either side of the plate and pounds the inner half well against RH hitters. He has a true cutter with late action and can manipulate the ball very well. His curveball has good sping and deep rolling depth. Herbst showed the ability to throw it to both sides of the plate as well, making it equally effective against LH and RH hitters. As for his change-up, it is a plus pitch, thrown with plus hand speed and deception. All three of his pitches are quality and he has command of them all. Better yet, his competitiveness and aptitude are also pluses. It is very fun to watch him compete, especially when he is at his best. Herbst is a no-doubt two-way prospect and top level D1 prospect. With some spikes in velocity and strength, he could also get some pro attention in 2008.

Lucas Herbst is a 2008 LHP/OF from Monterey HS, residing in Monterey, CA, with a 5'11" 155 lb. frame. Herbst has an average, athletic type build and possesses some athleticism, a good sign for the future of this young player. He considers pitching his primary position at the time of this showcase. Herbst pitches from a 3/4 slot and has fluid, athletic movements on mound with solid mechanics. He has good three pitch "mixability" and good velocity variance between his pitches (79 FB, 65 CB, 70 CH), two very good things for a lefty. As an offensive player, Herbst, a left handed hitter, hits from an open stance and has some bat speed. He has a quiet, early set-up and approach, and looks calm in the box. Herbst works to stay behind the ball and tends to get to the pull side more often than not. He had the look of an above average high school hitter with a chance to develop into a college hitting prospect. On defense Herbst gets to the ball in good position to throw. He has an accurate, under control arm, and it is a good arm (83 mph from OF). Herbst has a quick release because he gets to and through the ball well and all-around he has solid defensive abilities. He is a follow as a two-way prospect for now for the college level. College coaches would be advised to check in next summer to see how he has developed. L/L two-way guys certainly have significant value at the college level. Herbst is a small-mid D1 follow.
